What do you name your ships?

I'm rather fond of renaming my ships, though the default names are quite cool. What names do you use for your ships, and is it faction-dependant?

Names I like to use for the TEC are:

Collosus

Prometheus

Excalibur

Victory

Thermopylae (you gotta love those Spartans)

Resolute

Brotherhood

Alliance

Guardian

Heracles

And for the Vasari:

Slavebane

Impudence

Intrusion

Cleansweep

Incarcerator

Darklight

Shadow

Exodus (for the Evacuator)

Inferno

And for the Advent:

Vengeance

Epiphany

Revelation

Vigilante

Damnation

Enlightenment

Dreamcatcher

Apocalyptica

On a side note, what does the "TDN" stand for in front of the names of the Trader Emergency Coalition ships? If I may hazard a guess, Trader Defense Navy?

My ships' names are heavily influenced by Battlefleet Gothic.

My 1st Marza is usually called 'TDN Devastor', followed by ships named 'TDN Desolator' and 'TDN Destruktor'. Sometimes, I rather go giant-esque names, e.g. 'TDN Leviathan', 'TDN Juggernaut' or 'TDN Titan'.

As you can probably guess form the names, I mostly play TEC.

'Slavebane' and 'Dreamcatcher' are some nice ones.

If there was some kind of a campaign, I'd probably name ships after their most glorious battles.. say, 'TDN Guardian' if it managed to halt an enemy fleet on its own or at least as the only CAP.

I posted my list in another thread:

Advent:

Radiance: The Empyrrean, The Barathrum, The Xantippe, ... (Total Annihilation place names)

 * Wish: Please, Ironclad, give me longer name spaces so I can also use names like "The Nigh Pilago", "The Tergiverse IV" and "The Thalassean"

Halcyon: The Harbinger, The Omen, ...

Psi Battlecruiser: The Ethereal, The Celestial, The Ascended, ...

Support Battlecruiser: The Exarch, The Confessor, ...

Motherships: The Matriarch, The Empress, ...

TEC:

Kol Battleships: CSS Normandy, CSS Omaha, CSS Iwo Jima, ... (World War II battles)

Carriers: CSS Ohio, CSS Nebraska, CSS Virginia, ... (U.S. States)

Battlecruiser: CSS Cornwall, CSS Yorkshire, CSS Edinburgh, ... (U.K. place names. I dunno, I just get the image of British Navy destroyers in my head when using this ship)

Siege Battlecruiser: CSS Volgograd, CSS Rostov, CSS Voronezh, ... (Russian Cities)

Colony Ships: CSS Columbus, CSS Magellan, CSS Cook, ... (Explorers)

Vasari: I hate playing as Vasari, so I haven't bothered to make a list yet.

I rarly name my ships. The few times I did I went with major battlefields, such as Iwo Jima, gettysburh, shilo, I have also used stalingrad. I think those are the only times, and only ones I used.

I usually name mine crude words, mostly after genitalia. Well what does the the Radiance look like to you!

"Death & Gravity", "Killing Time", "Grey Area", "Sleeper Service" and yes I have had a fleet led by Grey Area's other name before now.

Unfortunatley I think "Anticipation of a new lovers return" is a tad too long :(

EDIT:

I wonder if "Frank Exchange of Views" will fit....

My main capital ship is always called "The Defiant", regardless of race.

As for other names?

Advent: Arkwright, Flux, Eclipse, Fenrir, Thunder, Lightning, Shine, Aura and Luna. Bonus points to anyone who gets the references.

I rarely play other races, but when I do, I play TEC, and I always use "SA Normandy" \o/

I usually play as TEC and my first ship is always Event Horizon. The rest I name on whatever is on my mind. I named one once Mountain Dew.

I rarely play Vasari, so tend to enjoy naming my ships in a very human convention when I play TEC or Advent.

I used to prefix every name with EAS for Earth Alliance Ship, but found the characters that took up restricted what I could use for names.

I started off with my favoured route of Babylon 5-style mythical/classical history names, such as:

Apollo, Agamemnon, Cassius, Damocles, Kraken, Cerberus, Medusa, Gorgon, Chimera, Hydra, Griffon, Vesta, Juno, Ariadne, Alexander, Bucephalus, Wyvern.

In my view of space fleets, Battleships and Carriers are always the largest ships, even if they aren't in Sins, so my Kols/Sovas/Radiances will always be named one of:

Leviathan, Colossus, Behemoth, Titan, Zeus, Hades.

However lately I've had a bit of a penchant for some faux-classical names, as inspired by the genius that is Dan Abnett, and have been using the following:

Titus Invictus, Ajax Excelsior, Sicarea Faero, Imperius Rex, Deus Titanus, Brutitor, Raptorus Rex, Prince Manix, Augmenautus, Demos Annilus, Dominus Victrix, Imperius Dictatio.

To me, all these names inspire awe and pride in your fleets and allies, as well as fear and fealty in your enemies. After all, who wouldn't want to go to war accompanied by the majesty and power of the battleship Imperius Rex and her attendant escorts?

Alternately, which of the following messages would an embattled, outnumbered fleet admiral rather receive?

'Admiral, Sir, we're receiving a sub-space message, the carrier BigBoy is on her way!'

'Admiral, Sir, we're receiving a sub-space message, the carrier Leviathan is on her way!'

I know which I'd rather hear when enemy cruisers are bearing down on my position...

and Home One

Nice ;)

My prefix is CFS= Colonial Fleet Ship and I only play TEC

My 1st Marza is "Pegasus"

1st Kol is "Galactica"

Then i go:

Defiant

Atlantia

Enterpeise

Intrepid

Voyager

Reliant

Valkyrie

I name my starbases different things, depending where they are. If i know its gunna see action, i name it"Fwd. Command", if they're for defence, i call em "Vanguard #"

Whenever I get a grav well connected to a wormhole i call the planet "Bajor" and name its starbase "Terok 'Nor" and the SB i put at the wormhole "Deep Space 9"

Ones in other neutrals are "Deep Space 1-8"

Now im gunna hang my head in nerdy shame....

My first capital ship is the TDN Aurora and almost always a Kol class. (I only play as TEC.) After that I for the most part don't name the ships. I've always thought that TDN stood for Trade Defense Network, I don't why I just do.

I still think that TDN stands for "The Dorkiest Nerds"

it's in the manual somewhere, but:

TDN= Trader Defense Navy

UNV= Unity Naval Vessel

VES= Vasari Exodus Ship

I like the default names. It's the starbases I have to watch out for, though, since I ended up with more than one Vokorul or more than one Purity or more than Galvanov, if you get my gist.

I stay Amish themed.

Buggy from Hell

Space Buggy

Demon Horse

Pitchfork

Road Apples

you get the gist

lol @ Amish

Anyways, I prefer these... They are pretty much the same regarless of race

Trinity Blade (primary flagship which is a battleship; ships are only christened this after reaching level six)

Providence (used on highest level carrier)

Ultimas (used on any high level ship)

Hercules (the first battleship I make is named this until it reaches level six.  Then another one takes its place)

Tri-Star (used on the first dreadnought to reach level 6+)

Eyron (used on support ships)

Victory (used on the first ship other than the Trinity Blade to reach level 10)

Eclipse (level 6+ Marza)

Wormwood (used only on a level 10 Marza)

Many of the ships' names come from the book I'm writing.  The Trinity Blade, Providnece, Hercules, Tri-Star, Victory, and Wormwood are the ships that constitute a fleet of super-ships that are the size of planets [that is, the individual ships are that big].  The Trinity Blade is the flagships of this Olympus Fleet while the Hercules is another battleship, the Providence is a carrier, the Tri-Star is a destroyer.  The Victory is the Trinity Blade's sister ship while the Wormwood is the Tri-Star's sister.

So, I guess the heirarchy would be this:

Prime Fleet

Flagship Trinity Blade

Tri-Star

Victory

Eyron

Rear Fleet

Flagship Hercules

Providence

Ultimas

Wormwood

In short, the Trinity Blade is the most powerful ship I use and if I have extra credits laying around, I upgrade whatever weapons it may have.

Hiashi (means spreading of fire)

Sendo (death)

Shakaku (angel of fire)

Ranmyaku (chaos)

And you cant go wrong with Yamato

Stalingrad

George W Bush

Stuff along those lines, I dont have set names

One time I named my home world Chuck Norris and all my ships stuff like Chuck's Fury, Chuck's Rage, ect.

I never play as Advent.
