MS Throws A Cat Amongst The XP Pigeons

MS Throws A Cat Amongst The XP Pigeons

I can see feathers flying everywhere.

Well, XP might just be on its last legs after all... according to this PC User article. http://blogs.pcworld.com/techlog/archives/006751.html

It seems sales of XP will cease as of June 08, except for very low end laptops, etc.... and while it may not be too popular with many, it would seem MS resources are to be focussed on the future/new technology, rather than old OSes it deems to have passed their use by date.

It's time for XP to go bye-bye.

Not so for XP Pro - if I need to replace a rig in my business network after June, that's going to be a real problem. MS needs to acknowledge that many businesses simply can't migrate everything to Vista, which has all kinds of network integration issues, at least according to the IT professional who supports our network - Win2K & XPP coexist without any problems, not so XPP, Win2K & Vista.

Might be time to purchase a few more XPP licenses.

By the way Starkers I just looked it up:

Windows 95: $14.50
Windows 98 SE: $38.50
Windows 2000: $68.00
Windows XP Home: $62.50
Windows Vista Home Premium: $75.00

So those numbers are from Pricewatch. I think most people are going to want to save money and not buy Vista as they will have to upgrade hardware as well.

And if MS forces them to buy Vista they still have a choice. It's called OSX or Linux.

Xp will still be available to System Builders for a while yet. This from MS website

Windows XP Professional

Date of General Availability
December 31, 2001

Direct OEM and Retail License Availability (end date)
June 30, 2008

System Builder License Availability (end date)
January 31, 2009

While the 01/2009 date is for license only, if you've got the media, you've got time. ;)

Also, don't have the link handy, but extended support (patches) is set to run until sometime in 2014, I believe

I was also thinking that if people are forced to buy Vista we might see more people pirating XP. Assuming of course that XP would no longer be available from any source to buy.

The fact is, those who can't accept change need to get out of the pc market.

The arguments are that people still use Win 98 and 2k.

I think this Valve hardware survey speaks volumes about that:

http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html

Xp has already killed off any past OS. And Vista is gaining, and will soon kill off it.

Of over 1,200,000 people using Windows Xp, 9,000 use Windows 2k.

Highly doubtful that these people who would pirate Xp would be interested in advancing technology. They just wanna buy the same type of PC with Xp.

Yeah that's correct pictoratus. Primary support through 2009, extended support through 2014 (unless something has changed...).

Whatever. I could probably dig up a survey that says the exact oppisite. You can't trust everything you read. I know people that swear by Windows 98 and really dislike XP.

There are very valid reasons for a business, a small business in particular, to stick with what already works well. After all, business needs are application-driven, not OS-driven. If your mission-critical apps require a more advanced OS, then you upgrade; if they don't, you have no compelling business reason to move to a new OS.

Yep, dinosaurs.......the lot of them. Give me one advantage that 98 has over XP  :NOTSURE:

Yep, Pic that's right.

Those with sense will stick with their speedy, responsive, and non-problematic XP systems and give the bloated over-rated Vista a miss and jump into a much leaner and productive Windows 7  :)

I never said 98 had any advantages over XP. People just don't like change. So they stick with what they are comfortable with.

My Vista system is speedy, responsive and non problematic. Vista isn't as bloated as you think. You just haven't give Vista with SP1 a fair try I think. ;)

...and MS is looking to offload all that to focus on Vista and future OSes that are/will become more stable and secure...less resource intensive...

LOL!!!

Yeah, we all have to keep repeating this same old mantra at each new promise of a new version of the same old problems M$ keeps throwing over us all... ;p

Has M$ ever fulfilled ANY of its marvellous promises???

btw, only the market will tell what will happen to XP and when - in the real business world... ;) :HOT:

Zellio, I would have never thought that what I choose to run as an OS would really mean so much to everyone. WOW!

I dunno if anyone has mentioned this but Vista is going to be replaced in 09.  Forget XP, Vista only has 1 more year of shelf life.  Happy shopping! :)

Oh come on, that's an outright lie. No one is or was happy with Windows 98. And if you are (or where) then you have.... issues....

Trust me...as a support technician for two years, there are more people than you know who REFUSE to upgrade.

Which is why I'm glad I'm moving up to tech manager this summer...let the n00bs get the ME and 98 calls!

As for Windows 2000, I still use it on some machines. It was a decent O/S.

That's right...go and throw a whole box of cats amongst the pigeons. ;)

In fact, given the consensus around here that MS couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery, there's probably that many cats amongst the pigeons there that the engineers, writers and coders are coughing up fur balls/choking on feathers. ;)

Oh well, benevolent Bill could always open a refuge for stray cats, thus making it safer for the coding pigeons. ;)

Which brings me to a point! I'm not so sure this relationship between MS and Stardock is such a good thing. Well we've all seen it... the "Egads, one of our coding pigeons, etc, etc...." message, and me thinks our page load issues can be put down to Brad and/or other Stardock employees visiting MS, feeling sorry for the cute kitty, and going: "Here puss, puss." and taking 'em back to HQ to wreak havoc on our forum pigeons. ;)

Yup, I'm with Po` on cats... particularly when I could say: "I've been to Bali, too", in between page loads. ;p

No it isn't, Windows 7 goes into the alpha/beta process in 09, Bill Gates made a mistake when he announced that it would be out next year. Windows 7 is not due out for a few years.. at the least. They say sometime in 2010, but knowing Microsoft's previous habit to delay nearly everything it will more than likely be around 2011.  ;)
