Gal Civ nay sayers turned believers

Just curious if anyone else is in the same boat as me.
Myself? Well I am a game fanatic, strategy games included. I tried out a copy of Gal Cil 1 quite awhile ago and wasn't impressed (didn't get too deep into it however). I could not stand turn based games on the PC. Sure, I love playing Risk and Axis and Allies but board games were a different story. I tried out Civilizations 4 and could not stand it (I know, blasphemy to most PC gamers). So, Gal Civ 2 comes along, and of course I don't think much about it until I start reading into it more. The features sounded very cool, but a turn based game... bah! So I just ignored that it was comming out and looked forward to Empire at War (which I got and actually enjoy quite a bit) and Battle for Middle Earth. Well, I was cruising around Gamespot the other day and saw the review for Gal Civ 2 and was amazed at what a high score they gave it. Soon enough reviews started popping up everywhere praising the game. So I decided to take a chance, purchased an online copy, and downloaded the game. I started cruising around in game, thinking it was just like every other turn based game, and I'd give it a shot. Soon enough one turn ended, another began. A couple hours in, It was the typical "Eh, I'll turn it off after the next turn" line you tell yourself. Twelve hours later, realizing the day had disappeared and my empire was nearly complete I finally turned off the game, nearly at the end of my first game on Gal Civ. I was totally sucked in. The next morning, still addicted, I turned it on and finished up my conquest of the universe before heading to work, beating my first scenario. Now every day since I've got it, I turn it on, boot up what ever game I'm currently on, and fiddle around with it for about an hour at least. Ironically, the reason I mainly got the game was for the ship building feature, however, I spend much more time on maintaining my empire than on building ships. So, just out out of curiousity, anyone else here do the same thing as me and take a chance on this game?
Also, out of curiosity for the other readers, when you are humans what do you typically do: be the good guys, protectors of the galaxy and diplomats to the other races? or do you tend to be the tyrants, with a power lust and want total domination over the other races? (In my case, I'm definatly the kinda guy that gets buddy buddy with the Torians and Alterians, then forms an alliance against the evil aligned races)

Ahh, how you've missed out. Master of Magic, X-COM, Age of Wonders, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Total Annihilation, Kohan... it makes me cry. Welcome to the real world, Neo!

Age of Wonders suked noodles too, but, you're other choices are right on. Also glad to have another convert to the best side of gaming. Turn Based. A thinking mans game and not a kiddle click fest game.

No, Total Annihilation and Kohan weren't turn based.

But they were the only Real Time Strategy games which actually had significant strategic depth. Particularly Kohan which IMO is still the best RTS ever created - more so the Kohan 1 games (Kohan Immortal Soveriegns and Kohan Ahriman's Gift) than Kohan 2 but even the latter is up there.

Don't get me wrong, there are some very pretty and fun Real Time Tactics games around (eg, Warcraft 3, the AoE series, etc) but genuine Real Time Strategy games are nearly non-existent.

It is nice to see companies like Stardock writing for an under served genre like Space TBS. It gives me hope that eventually some of the other neglected genres (including true RTS) may get quality games to fill the voids.

Silent Storm tickled me, as well; I loved the destructable levels. Nothing better than raping an entire building with extended HMG bursts and having the front of it collapse into smoke and dust. 'Course, the AI in that game was sad, but the graphics almost made up for it.

Darn this forum for not having Private Messages -- I bet you are the Saber Cherry of Dom2 fame -- funny you didnt mention Dom2 in your praises!
How do you think Dom2 and GC2 stack up, Saber? (Here is my email, I was tinkthank on the dom2 boards: bigboote AT gmx.net -- give me a ring, perhaps?)

Age of Wonders: SM is a very decent game, why do you, psychoravin, say it sucks noodles?

Yep, it's me. I don't want to gush too much about Doms2 because I've already mentioned it some other threads

The AI in AOW:SM was piss poor and you got less races to play against than you did in the origional. AOW origional was pretty good. AOW:SM suked noodles, nothing more than a graphics candy up date. Pitiful piss poor AI. And the idiots that did the unofficial patch 1.04 only did it for multiplayer BALANCE and that is something else that screwed up the game and what makes Master of Magic the best of all time of this genre, unbalanced races gives the AI an advantage you can't give them in the AOW series. So, it suks noodles as a single player game and I don't play multiplayer so that part of the game doesn't count whatsoever.

Hmmmmm .... interesting variety of opinions. I thought AOW:SM was an outstanding game while MOM had mediocre AI at best.

Civilisations never really captured me - for some reason I never really got into it. However I did play most of the XCom turn based strategy game, Outpost and Alpha Centauri.

I took a chance on Gal Civ 2 for 3 reasons:
- I had been waiting for another good turn based game
- Word of mouth has it that it was great
- It wasn't copy protected

I don't regret it. Well, I regret playing it through to the middle of the night to next morning but that's another story...
