Ok I admit it

I've realised as much as I love GalCiv3 I kind of suck at it, in my current game when i meet the Dregin and they declared war on me there power was 110, mine was 33????

Up until then I thought I was doing ok, I was clearly mistaken.

The sad thing I was playing on beginner with just 3 opponents.

Mind you when I met the Altarians they where on 30 power and I was on 48, seems the Dregin where way out in front of both of us, then in another game again the power difference between me and the Dregin in another game was me ~30 them about 100, again at beginner.

When making the AI better please consider those of us who kind of suck, (mind you they weren't being all that aggressive in attacking me so I probably can still win) and on a more serious note it seems the Dregin get powerful more quickly than most the other races under AI control.

econundrum it`s a balancing act to get as far up the tech line and hit the weapons tech to help with this. If I can trad with the other races for weapons tech i`ll try it

I need start cranking out armed ships as well as my colony ships I know this slow me down some but it`s price that has to be paid when dealing with a war Hungry race. Also I`m playing bigger maps so i`s takes longer to find them or they find me.

I think the change in morale to not effect production and leaving in the malevolent 10 production to the home world is a bit over powered and I think that is why the Drengin are getting so powerful so fast in a lot of games.  They get that bonus which was originally intended to counteract the low morale of the Drengin and they just start cranking out tons of ships.  However that is also the point of this point of the beta, the game is just about feature complete so its time for balancing everything.

Also I don't feel so bad about my last showing with my custom synthetic race using the Yor tech tree after reading your post, I at least had my opponents on normal but they were all much larger and had much bigger fleets.  I held my own for a bit but I didn't start building warships until I met someone else so the first 4 or 5 opponents I met all decided I was ripe for conquest so things went down hill fast.

Started a new game as organic and it seems much easier to get started, like the Yor stuff is more expensive.  I haven't spent the time to verify that yet but I plan on it soon.

There is a current Bug with the Drengin. They are getting far too many starting traits and this is definitely making them overpowered. I do believe our next opt in patch this week will address this issue.

I find it strange that this is not happening to me.

Over three games I have built this pattern:  I colonize hard and build an economy focused on production and population.  I also chase down approval artifacts.  I work in enough military techs to keep current but don't make military ships yet, just colonies and constructors and survey.  When I meet the Drengin they are bigger than me and more powerful and they declare war immediately.  They threaten or take the forward settled planet I put next to them.  I put everything into military production.  I also switch to logistics research.  I lose a bit of territory, but then I finally get a wave of current military ships that I can put in fleets.  The Drengin start getting toasted.  By that time I have a wave of transports.  I become the biggest baddest thing in the galaxy.

I have my opponents at gifted.  I am not expecting to get away with any of this when the AI gets smart.  I'm just surprised at the difference in games.

This is funny because I am a real "investment" player meaning I don't like building warships early on because that money could be going towards building far better stuff later, yet I have never been declared war on by any other civ while playing all my 4 beta games... wtf?

yes the game has changed in Beta 5 people declare war on me all the time, they don't attack that often though luckily on the lowest difficulty.

It's probably map settings.  If you don't share borders, are close enough to attack, etc, there are a lot fewer reasons for them to declare war than if the opposite is true.

Your score deficit is probably almost entirely comprised of your fleet disparity.  I've had 90% of the planets and invincible ships and still been far behind the "leader" in score simply because his fleet was far larger, if unable to actually impact mine significantly.  Your influence, production, and technology may be far higher than the drengin have and still place you well below them in strength.

I aim for the early economy and research boosting technology to get my planets productive, and then I go full military to get large hulls and decent weapons and defenses before I flesh out further, and aim for getting a free ships bonus from ideology around this point.  It's an effective stop gap in defending your empire before your production is rolling on your new toys.
