Compatibility for mobile gamers.

Really.

Simplified game, easier AI, less complexity, to be compatible with phones and tablets. Kids mode, a way for children to learn.

Also more women need to play strategy games and not mojung or angry birds in the current market as 4X is widely unknown to people who get their games from the top ten in the app store.

Please put this mode in the game, let children and women learn to love 4X and not candy crush saga and GTA.

I think women are more than capable than playing GCIII, or any other game for that matter.

Is it a troll ? Are you living in the middle age ?

At least one of the questions should be answered by a yes.

Don't even try this. I've mentioned this to other founders and they also wonder why not as many women play 4X or galciv as men.

As for the idea its titled KIDS mode. I believe it would be easier for children. As for women they are more inclined to play games on mobile devices so it makes sense to bundle the two markets. Maybe just call it a mobile version idk, I think there is a opportunity here. :3

(I came up with this idea in the shower like 90% of all my ideas.)

There was and is an ongoing study were a guy has placed computers in small villages in 3rd world countries. These computers are fully internet capable and only in English. Not only that, the villagers are given no instruction on how to use them. To his surprise these kids have not only learned how to use these computers and learn to read English, they even have asked him if he could upgrade the RAM when he visited.

If a kid is inspired or curious to learn something, they will.

Kid Mode:  Create a standalone ship designer with friendly display.  Thaa would go a long way.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... Darca, you're just odd. ;)

The word you are looking for is creative as I am left handed, meaning my right brain is pro-dominate. When I'm odd I get thirsty, mainly from yelling at people that don't capitalize DARCA!!! :p

So this is what you wanted me to support? Hmmmmm. Well lets see. First I am against the dumbing down of humans so dumbing down a game just to get more customers is IMHO wrong. Sorry can't support there. As to women? Well they are just as intelligent and capable as men. There is no need to dumb it down for them. Most don't play these games because they don't want to.

Sorry, cannot support you man.

Actually you just hit the button Ryat. :)

We know women young kids and adults aren't playing games like this as much as older men. They prefer playing on mobile devices and other. So to have them play the game, it has to be compatible with those devices. Most phones and tablets have smaller hard drives and RAM. So it really would be a paradox to you I can see that, but its also the only way to get it on other platforms. Otherwise the problem will still persist.

I've known ALOT of people over the years who are in the mobile category and and are male and female, all of them Goff off at work (and everywhere) and all of them play games and they would love LOVE to play something meaningful.

DARCA, I'm under the impression you're not quite asking for a straight up GalCiv 3 release on the app store, but a standalone GalCiv-like game that's more approachable basically. While that's not a bad idea in terms of the mobile market, that would take a lot of work and potentially a modified or seperate framework that has less features. That would eat up a lot of development resources that could go towards actually completing the game we want. It would also likely need to be 32-bit, as I'm not sure if an iPad and such could do complex enough processing involved with 64-bit unless some other aspect was sunk down to compensate.

There's also been some solid strategy games on the mobile market that just didn't succeed. While on-the-go GalCiv would be fun for a niche market, in reality the people who would really enjoy it are the ones who would already enjoy the full game. Mobile gamers like things they can pick up and play for 5 minutes, then set down and do something else. Or multitask while playing easily. As some irony though, the mobile market thrives on quick games and more complicated ones struggle, but people will still spend hours on those fast games anyways. I'll never understand that.

Not to stray too far off topic, but this is why Nintendo handhelds continue to thrive even against mobile competition: they offer games that are usually easy to pick up and play, but are much more in-depth and can be appreciated in both small bites and lengthy sessions. Basically it's a middle ground market they've found in handheld gaming.

I would also like to note: the target market of GalCiv 3 is 4x PC gamers, which can be male, female, kid or adult. Age or gender doesn't equate to ability to play a game. Everyone has their own preferences. I've been playing strategy PC games since around age 7 or so, because the challenge was engaging and my older brother assured me that losing was an important part of learning a game haha. Anyone can learn, it's just a matter of having the interest in the game genre enough to do so.

More recent surveys show that female gamers (ladies who play 4X, AA, mmo's, rpgs), make up ~47% of gamers.  Thank you.

This is what settler difficulty with maximum advisor help does in civ5. I am sure this game will have a similar difficulty and help option. The only difference is they intend it to be used by casual people or new players instead of women and children.

If you want to get more women into this kind of games, treat it like getting more women into science (or getting anyone into anything really), appeal to how this game might fulfill their interest. Segregating them will just make a lot of people angry. Ofcourse studies show that a surprising amount of serious gamers are already female, and the mean gemer age is going up ass well.

Now what we really need is a game mode for old men with arthritis and glaucoma. Ans support for the MindOrb5000 input device for those of us who have transcended our physical bodies.

Just kidding, I know you weren't trying to be prejudice ;)  I want the MindOrb5000 though!

I'm deeply trying to not over think this as I have many things to do. I haven't thought this entirely through, guess SD has though. If there will be mac versions I guess making a mobile version wouldn't be far behind?

If you want an attempt on a mobile version I might be on board. Still up in the air about mobile games. They still seem too simplistic for a good 4X. In the future though, you may want to word your proposals more carefully.

streaming from your desktop to your mobile is a great solution for 4x games as the lag you get doesn't really matter much. As long as you can make the UI work ofcourse.

darca, I think there are flaws in your assumptions that:

a ) a simpler, mobile platform game would generate a larger audience than a conventional 4x.

and

b ) players of this hypothetical mobile game would be easily converted into players of a traditional 4x.

While the mobile gaming community is larger than the strategy gaming community, it is also much more competitive and difficult to market toward. The mobile gaming market is an ocean of crap that drowns out most of the gems (I know my metaphor fell apart there). Yes, some good games get attention and sell, but many, many more get lost in the noise that is the mobile gaming market. The strategy gaming community is smaller, but more dedicated. Make a quality game and through reviews, word of mouth, and media, you have a good chance of attracting your costumer. Mobile gaming is essentially a crap shoot, even with a good game. Also, one of the reasons there are more mobile gamers than strategy gamers is that the experience is completely different. You can't count on players that are used to tapping their screes for ten minutes at a time a few times a day on the subway to want to sit in front of a computer and parse out detailed strategic information for hours a day.

When you say you think they should make a game for kids, what age are you thinking of? I was playing Civ and Warlords when I was 13, and would probably have been playing earlier except that they didn't exist yet. I don't think the game need dumbing down for younger players and certainly not for women.

^^ The title is now Compatibility for mobile gamers. Not kids mode anymore! :p

Irony. Most of us played strategy games at a young age including myself and someone said women are about half the market as is fair. It is ironic that these statistics are fractions of a larger equation, being other potential mobile gamers.

The main reason this posts ideas and wording suck so bad is because I'm not a mobile gamer, I use my phone to write the very article and others, but that's it. I'd figure most of us lack qualification on multi platform games and particularly what makes a mobile version tick as we are mostly PC desktop/laptop gamers and such ideas are incomprehensible to us. :)
