Rebellion Development Time

OK, to start this off, I am all for developers taking their time creating things. I vastly enjoy quality over quantity as I'm sure most people do. I pre-ordered Rebellion a long time ago, and it's almost been a year since they announced it. My question is, why is it taking this long? From the Q&A, I've seen exciting things that are being added, but they really aren't these huge things that should take forever to make. We haven't even seen in-game footage yet. Does Stardock just take a long time developing a game but in the end creates a quality title? Are they keeping everything under wraps until they suddenly release it? Did they run into a snag shortly after announcing the title? Is this expansion pack meant to be a replacement for a Sins sequel? I'm just wondering why we've only gotten a few pictures and Q&A's over the past year.

PS Absolutely love Sins vanilla, and I'll wait as long as I need to for Rebellion.

Truth is we don't know completely what's being added, I think they've given us enough info to explain why this is more than a mere expansion like the other two but I think they have more under wraps as a surprise, not to mention they probably do want to make sure this works as smoothly and without as much bugs as possible.

Something kind of related I've been thinking about recently is how much of Rebellion (the creative content) the Sins modding community could accomplish on their own, if they had access to the more basic software infrastructure like the devs...

That's true; with the addition of the Titans and the other ships, they are probably spending a lot of time balancing to make sure these new things are not over/under powered and to make gameplay the best they can.

"devs" = Ironclad + Stardock

"Devs" is short for "Game Developers". Ironclad and Stardock, that is.

I have to admit that this is sure taking its sweet time before releasing any news of it ...

I haven't pre-ordered it for these reasons ... show me a game ... and I'll show money.

Show me no news ... well the same on my side ... still enjoyed Dimplomacy... but I'm kinda afraid about Rebellion never coming out ... at this point of waiting at the very least.

Speaking of which, has anyone even mentioned when (if it is not going on right now) is the Open/Closed Beta?

I just can't wait for Sins 2 to find out who the Vasari are being chased by. I bet they'll be a forth playable race, which would be awesome! That and with a civil war going on (with Rebellion) and the fact that the factions have been beaten up by decades of war... makes the universe ripe for conquest.

But Sins 2 is probably too far out to be thinking about, hence I return to my original statement: Any news on when a Closed/Open Beta will be occuring?

No news on the Beta yet, Rebellion isn't due out until sometime in Spring which means they have 5 months or so to go still to release on time...

That being said the Fallen Enchantress Beta is about to begin so I would assume that will go on for two or three months and once that is finalized and released or at least very close to that point, attention will be turned to the Rebellion Beta.  Since Sins is a far more polished game by comparison to Elemental, I would assume our Beta to be shorter in duration since Sins didn't get the same kind of overhauls that Elemental got.

My advice would be to pay attention to Fallen Enchantress and when it looks like they've got everything buttoned up the way they like it, start getting pumped up for our beta.

One probably can't use diplomacy as a comparison since Rebellion seems like it will be larger however, I think the announcement of that expansion was in early September and the diplomacy beta started in late November of the same year. It may have been the case that they announced Rebellion much earlier to the public than previous expansions.

I agree with the others that we probably won't see a Rebellion beta for the next month or so with Fallen Enchantress going into beta next week.

A lot of time has gone into art for Rebellion, which only hit full stride a few months ago and has continued to accelerate. While that's finished up, we now spending more time on balance and making sure that things actually work/play as intended. Add that to improving existing systems and trying to keep memory use in check, and it adds up to a lot of time. We'd rather take that time to make Rebellion really polished than rush it out only to have everyone hate it. ;)

Sounds good to me.

Polish it up to a brilliant, scintillating golden shine.  If it isn't ready until next January, it's not ready until then.

One thing I hope you guys will do is to work on a cost-effective marketing strategy.  I still feel that Sins is a very much overlooked and mostly unknown game amongst the RTS community, or at least amongst the online multiplayer PvP RTS community that mostly plays Starcraft.  It would be nice if that group could discover Sins.

Glad to hear that.  Still have to say though a touch more news of some sort from time to time would be nice.  Just the occasional bone to the rabid mongrels that are the customers.  It's difficult after all to anticipate a game so highly and then have it come within a hairsbreadth of apparently vanishing as many other highly anticipated games (and mods) have done over the years.

Think of it as assuaging the concerns of a worried following.  Of which your response was a good start.

Sounds good to me as well... of course, I do hope I get some play time with it before the world ends. :S

Edit: On second thought, take your time ... I'd hate to have the last game to be forced out just to make a few bucks befor it was ready. *Looks squarely at you BF3*

Don't forget Sword of the Stars II...

I am all for "taking time," but I would at least like to see something official for the pre-order funds I've already pledged.  How about an official site, with official screenshots, links, etc.  Even C&C Generals 2 has that much.  So far, I have forums and speculation about what it could be.  I'm not asking for beta access at present, just an official movie, some stills, even a dev diary excerpt on a dedicated section of the website would be freaking awesome.

As much as I appreciate finished products, it seems to me that when they allowed pre-orders they had an anticipated release date that has already passed.  If not, then the tone sure made it sound like it wasn't going to take this long.  Even now, there is nowhere near a firm date on the beta or release, and little to no information about the game is being released(and come now, screenshots are VERY easy to do).

Really... I think this is a case of them announcing WAY to early, underestimating their development time frame, and having no real set info release strategy.  Granted, they would never admit this, but we all know that the flow of information here is slower than a snail, which is generally irritating at best.

Yah, I never pre-order until they come out with packaging details. In a few cases, I'll actually get a collector's edition content if it really interest me. But as far as taking preorders early, I can understand you want to make sure your money isn't wasted, but you do take that risk in putting down money on a game that doesn't have any details out. Games are always getting delayed and such, I dont know how long I've been waiting on ME 3.

Fortunately, I got in on the early, early preorder deal...but I spend that kind of money each month on a whim.  I agree that I would like the details rather than getting hold of a game once its released and still thinking that it wasn't worth the wait time.  All I really want to see is the same level of information just about every other game set to release later this year has online, instead of having to troll the forums and interwebs for bits of possible info.  Come on Stardock...you guys are better than that!

Tongue in cheek... Since 2008 when original Sins was released we have gotten: 3 Starbases/ 3 envoy cruisers/ A diplomatic tech tree/ Mines/ 2 new skyboxes Am I forgetting something.....? Oh yeah ...anti structure frigates.

Planed release date Rebelion is late 2012. I supose 4th quater. They wrote note on his website. In my opinion is takes so long like for addon. Ironoclad is a small company with staffing shortages. Therefore making something it takes them so long. If we dont see projects results until spring, thats projects will be threatened.

What's with all the doom and gloom? I would personally rather have them spend time on the game itself than doing anything else, sure a bit more info would be nice, but it's not that big a thing for me. Personally I've been impressed with both Stardock and Ironclad, they treat us, their customers, like people. I appreciate that, and am therefore content with what they have told us, and also content to wait until such a time as they deem ready to release more info or the beta.
