Did you try saving the game, restarting your computer and reloading the game? Sometimes doing this really improves the speed on my late games...

Edit: also, if your system is multicore (as most are nowadays), setting sins affinity for one of the processors appears to help with speed...

You could also try turning the "Effects" off, which do nothing but look pretty.

Having lots of strikecraft late game can cause large amounts of lag as well - if you have 50+ squads (which isn't that uncommon), every time they automatically retarget there's a significant clip in the game.

You could also try playing with smaller fleet sizes.

close backround programs and defrag?

Turn off trade ship icons? Reduce graphics settings? Reduce exhaust trail detail? Stop playing on x4 speed! ;)

yeah, the 4x speed is the worst thing you are probably doing to it. If you want things to progress faster, alter the speed options in the game options. Or you can start off at a fast pace and slow it down once your system starts slowing down.

Ive already got all the things like research speed, ship speeds to max and its progressively slowed down on big maps.

Don't worry it is suppose to do that, you aren't doing anything wrong.
