A couple of questions... (not really related)

Hi.

So I'm in the mood to start playing Sins again and was thinking of getting the expansions now that they have all been released.  The thing is that I'd really prefer not to use impulse as I have all of my "digital only" games tied to Steam and don't want to deal with another client just for 1 game.  Is there any way to get the expansions as a standalone installation like the original?  The word was that they would be released as such once they all came out, but that doesn't appear to be the case as Trinity still seems to require impulse (or am I mistaken?).  I'd like to get the expansions but impulse is really the only thing holding me back, is there any alternative?

My other question:  Is there still a place to browse the tech trees online?  The clansofsin.com domain appears to have been sold (it's just some search portal site now).

Thanks!

The Sins expansion packs (as well as patches) are only available via Impulse.  Just like you won't find any Steam exclusives on Impulse, you won't find any Impulse exclusives on Steam.

You can make an offline archive and don't need to be logged into impulse to play the game, which IMO are big advantages over Steam that really simplify things.  I only need to open Impulse in order to patch.

Thanks for the quick replies.

@myfist0: Yes I saw those on the wiki, I was wondering if there was a place which still had the trees shown graphically like they are in-game.

@Darvin3:  That was what I'd feared was the case.  My issue with impulse has more to do with the fact that I have to have a separate client installed in order to play this particular game when it's the ONLY game that requires it.  I know both clients are very similar and I don't want to start a flame war here about which is better.

Edit: Never mind, you answered the question I was going to ask right as I posted it!

As I said, you can turn off Impulse and you only need to run it when installing and patching.  I've got Impulse set up so it doesn't run at startup, so it's really more of a peripheral.

I understand where you're coming from; personally I dislike the very concept of tying my games to a single account and log in.  However, that just seems to be the reality of the industry right now.  Battle.net 2.0 is probably going to do the same thing for Starcraft and Diablo fans.  My personal preference is for Impulse because it's the least intrusive of the bunch, and that's basically the only thing I can tell you.

Yes I read a little bit about impulse and installed the client on one of my machines to try it out and I do like the flexibility it offers.  I was going to ask whether you needed the client running in order to launch games but you replied to my second post just as I edited it.

It's just that if you only *need* the client for installing/updating, why couldn't there just be some web interface we log into to get access to the installers which we just download, etc.  Also it seems like I could use impulse to install the game(s) on one machine and then just copy the install directory to another machine and circumvent the client entirely.

that is called impulseanywhere(but it is still a client program that will download the programs/updates of transfer to another machine), and by reports is designed to do just that. personally I have not used it so can not comment or advise upon it.

That's what I mean, you just download the installers yourself without the client, I'm still confused as to just why it says on the impulse anywhere site that the client is required.  On Sins I only play singleplayer, and I already registered my game on this site before impulse came out.  Couldn't I just buy the expansions and then download them this way?

Sorry for all of the questions, if there's a resource somewhere which explains all of this feel free to point me to it.  I'd just like to know the details of just how this is set up and the information that I've found doesn't answer my questions.

You can purchase Trinity in the store, but if you want to patch it up or if you want to play the game in online multiplayer then there's just no way around Impulse; it's part of the game's DRM now.  If you already own Sins you might as well just purchase the expansions through Impulse because you'll save money that way.  You'll probably want to update the game to the most recent version anyway and of course, if you get tired of the AI and conclude that it's incompetent and crave real opponents, you need Impulse to log onto Ironclad Online.
