This is Why I Can't Have Nice Things...

After spending a long time reading on how to mod, I tried to make a simple mod that increased the number of starbases in a gravity well for planets from one to 4 and in stars to 10 just because I feel that the very -second- you kill off most of an AI's army and keep an aggressive mindset they are entirely screwed where as humans can often come back.

 

Its the same with every RTS AI, hence I have always found it more fun to defend when against the AI and go against a few of them, and be all aggressive when playing with humans...

 

Still, I did everything right and it crashed... So badly that even removing the mod failed and using the backup didn't work either so I had to reinstall sins c..c

 

Would anyone be interested in actually doing some kind of mod, with the mindset of "making defence overpowered to make going against many AI more interesting and also making a counter attack on the humans part a -little- harder" =)

If you had to do this then you are not modding correctly. Read the pdf if you ever decide to pick it up again.

Yeah I am trying again, all I did was change a value for the max amounts of starbases from 1 to 4 on normal planets and from 4 to 10 on stars and BANG it all failed x3

 

Not sure if its something conflicting with it or ?

where did you get your source files to mod with?

I got the forgetools or whatever they are called where you have all the gamedata entity files that you can edit, and apparrently when you make your own mod it doesn't matter if its text or binary as the game converts it to binary, as long as its still an entity file and you dont screw it up too much heh.

I was wondering if I was structuring it wrong, if there is any nesceccary files to go in a mod folder or is it the kind of mod system where it just overides any of the vanilla stuff with your mod stuff ? :P

go to this forum site and download these tools, and use them on a copy of your game, you will always be able to access up to date source files this way

I tried that Ryat but the whole converting thing never works... Just tells me that it was sucessful but didnt bother converting anything because it wasn't able to... But it was sucessful ?

Edit: Ok started fresh, got the entity files ready but its in binary, I know that converter thing is supposed to convert to txt then back again after but now I can't even access the DL site, says it doesn't exist x..x

 

Edit 2: Ok, got harpo's version and its just telling me it can't find something called convertdata?version.exe or something so I placed "convertdata_entrenchment v1.041" but not only do I have -no- idea where to put it due to a lack of readme but even when i place it in the gameinfo folder and in the mod folder it just tells me "run time error 52 - bad file name or number" 

 

*sigh*

 

Edit 3: I just decided to go and convert my entire mod registery, but i think its done it for the whole game x..x

 

Why is it that it works for everything INCLUDING my mod but not when i just wanna do it to my mod... I have a feeling this wont work though x..x

If you're doing anything other than placing mod files in your documents and settings\local settings\application data\ironclad games\mods*version\whateveryourmodnameis\gamedata\, you're doing it wrong. and if you do that, you can always hit verify application on impulse to redownload the correct files.

If you still want a zipped copy of the reference files rather than converting them let me know and I'll hunt down the link to it.

Its ok it turns out that the only way I could convert the files from BIN to txt entity files was to process EVERYTHING...

 

Worked alright, but 4 SB's are faaar too overpowered :P  I think I will just stick to two and remove mines, I hate mines D:
