Game wont run

hangs on black screen

Every time I try and start the game, it'll hang on a black screen with a smaller resolution (I use 1920x1200). I got a new computer recently and haven't had any problems with Sins or other impulse games I have, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I tried running the game a few weeks ago and got an error that said it had a error activating the product and to check the serial number. Well, it's the same number I have on my other computer that ran the game fine. I also stopped getting this particular error popup and only get it if I right-click the game and do re-activate. Here is me doing this today.

Using silent activation with null serial mode.

Error activating the product

Please check the serial number that you have entered and ensure that it is associated with the email you used. Try to activate the product again. If you are using Stardock Central you can right-click on the product and attempt to activate without reinstalling.

End of quote

I saw in another thread who was having a similar problem to edit a file in the my documents/my games/galciv2 folder and manually change the resolution to what I use, but that didn't work.

If I got it right, you had previously an activation problem, but you don't have it anymore right ? if however I'm mistaken and you still need fixing in this area you might want to email : support@stardock.com

Now about the blackscreen issue. Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on which game you're playing:

Dread Lords: My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2
Dark Avatar: My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar
Twilight of the Arnor: My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Older versions may store the debug directly in the location the game is installed at.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

Ah ok. I assumed GalCiv2 prefs file was the file that worked for all versions. When I altered the settings like the other post mentioned for the GC2TwilightArnor prefs, it started working.

Sorry for the flase alarm - Thanks for the assistance though.

no problem I suspected that too but didn't want to jump on conclusions since on the net, one never knows the extent of the other knowledge ;)

have fun with the game \o/
