I was wondering if there is a way un-research your max fleet frigates/capital ships after they have been researched? Do you need to make new RESEARCHSUBJECT_MAXSHIPSLOTS files or can you add a value or string in the files that will allow you to un-research them?

There is a research property, where you must have the prerequesite labs to continue building a ship or using an ability. This doesn't apply to all research topics.
If you were to change the max ship slots to be the same, wouldn't they follow the same rules? If you had rank 5 fleets, but fell down to 2 labs... it might work out.
Naturally you'd have to lose a LOT in order to have your research fall back like that, but the restored income might help you rebound.
Hrm, actually yeah. You can change the research topics to be dependant on the number of labs, but I have no idea if it would cancel the economy penalty. It would be a bit clunky and would cause obvious issues with other things also needing labs unless you change them not to need labs. But, in theory, it might work.
