entity files in binary? Mod guide says they are text?

A mod guide im reading says that the .entity files are text documents you open in notepad, and they start off with TXT at the top. But the same files I open are binary files (as nothing lines up) and start with BIN at the top. Was this changed in one of the patches? Whats the proceedure to edit these files now?

i may need u to hold my hand on this one. please forgive my stupidity but i dont see how to stop my .ENTITY opening up in japanese(BIN) at the top and some open up as English(TXT) at the top.

i simple dont get it. ill keep reading it and playing with stuff til i do. sorry, im a total newb at this mod stuff.

BIN is binary, this format has only the the data and no english stuff (like tabs etc usualy).

BIN is faster and is used to speed up load times, TXT is the only way for a human to understand and modify it.

The game directory files (mostly) have BIN format files, the devs relese the TXT file versions so we can mod properly.

Simple.
