Should I play the Campaign?

Hello,

I've just purchased this game and I wondered if I should play the DL Campaign or any Campaign whatsoever. I have started the DL Campaign and I am on mission 3, but I am not sure I really like it. First of all it seems like I am forced to play as humans, sure I could change face and all but the story assumes I am human, right? And second, I tried to be a diplomatic person on the first mission because I just had a run of warfare when I played a "free game" as the Yor Collective, which was very fun I might add. So the problem was that I was forced to take over the enemy planet, I assume I could also have done it with influence? But it was rather useless being a diplomat as I already had a "Team" member and I couldn't do anything with the Drengi or whatever they are called. My point was that I could ONLY win by taking over that planet.

Now I am on the third mission and it seems to be another "take over that planet".

But I would really like to know the story, because when I checked the DA campaign I read a quite a large spoiler (I assume) because the first text explained what happend in the end of the DL caompaign (I also assume this).

So, is the DL campaign going to be better or should I skip it to the DA and perhaps even that one and only play free maps?

First of all, a campaign is typically a story mode whereby you role play as a certain character of a certain race and overcome certain things in certain missions. The basic idea is that you are given a finite set of options to accomplish a finite set of goals. Not sure what else to expect from a campaign.

The story line in DL and DA can probably be played separately without a huge amount of spoiling or feeling completely lost I think (just my opinion). I'm about half way through the DA campaign right now since TA is about to come out.

Most certainly, the crowning jewel of this game is not the campaign but the sandbox game. Rather you enjoy the campaign mode seems mostly dependant on rather you enjoy them in general. I think the wiki has the back story if you just want the cliff notes.

If I Install the Twilight of the Arnor, will I be able to play the old campaigns, too?

Yes, you can effectively roll back the game from TA to DA to DL if you so wished and play any of their campaigns. At the splash menu you get by using DAlaunch.exe (or in this case TAlaunch.exe) you get a Switch Chapter button that'll toggle between the three.

I never even tried any of the campaigns. I just went straight to sandbox, even when I used to play GC1, years ago. I don't know why. I do usually play the campaign in games, even multiplayer games with singleplayer mode tacked on. Hmm...Maybe I should give 'em a try.
