Newb lost in space. Need guidance.

I purchased this game a few days ago and I absolutey love what I see so far. The problem is, I'm severely stuck and not sure how to proceed. After watching the tutorials, I started the single player mode and started the first mission.

I've been slowly building my first area/planet up, got my metal/crytal mining going, built a few research centers, built some ships and missle defenses/upgraded my population. So far so good. But when it comes to venturing out to new places, this is when I get completely lost.

I ventured out to the surrounding planets and found a red/lava planet which prompted an audio cue saying "this looks like an inhabitable planet"...cool. I sent a few of my ships there, but non of them can colonize it....I assume it's because it's lava...any tips? I've looked through my research trees, I don't see anything that will help.

Look for volcanic colonization. That should be it. Who are you playing as? It might not say exactly that but it will have a picture of a volcano on it. Go to clans of sins for a complete tree.

If you're playing TEC, it's in the civilian research tree under the Engineering section. Middle section, second icon (first is Improved Arid Colonies) called Volcanic Exploitation.

I just got the game as well :) so I am still learning, good thing is though , well from what Ive seen thus far people are happy to give out great advice and mods seem to be trying to keep the place an atmosphere of respect with 0 flamming and that is very refreshing. I.e newbies bring able to ask stuff after they have read the manuals and such. Will be a few days until I have any decent idea of what Im doing but if you ever want to join someones game on line just for a laugh and to learn give me a shout :) I am a veteran RPG player and in other games but I am pretty terrible at strats so I will make an easy opponent for you. (I only purchased game yesterday on digital download and even though I am not a good player well I still enjoy the game since its something differant for me)
