Newbie: Follow up questions after advice

Hi Im just wandering how do I know where to go to kill pirates for diplomacy missions? I have only just started playing as off 1 hour ago and I started getting messages saying if I want favour then go kill pirates but I didnt have a clue where the pirates were. It does seem a really good game but I will be honest well I have been looking for something differant in a game, thats why I bought sins and plus multiplayer functionality to the same scale is what appealled to me big time but I feel a little out of my depth :) , I have done all the in game tutorials but when I started playing on a huge map sp well , I didnt get off the ground quick enough and the planets and asteroids all seemed to be taken. I then eventually figured to build maybe 5 or 6 frigates and cleared out the system with the asteriod and built extractors on them. I couldnt figure out how to get refinarys on the one I captured, and I run out of logistics points as well as not having a clue research wise lol

Dont take any of the above the wrong way ^^ these are my failings not the games Im just hoping when I do get proficiant that its not a matter of faster "clicker" on 1 or 2 build orders because if its not well I really like the idea of long drawn out battles where diplomacy is more realistic and counts and within that you have sub battles for resources and such.

Fact is Im terrible at the game though hehe but I was hoping to get the oppurtunity to watch a multiplayer game just to get an idea of what my starting prioritys should be so that Im not capping logistics and tactics points way to early and unable to colonise well into the game thus crippling me. I have been reading about the game features and borwsing the forums on here but could anyone point me in the direction of some guides for the game if there are even any out yet?

Thanks for reading...........seems a very good game and finally something where colonising planets and fighting over systems has been translated fully into MP without excuse...........great job !

Coel I got like the first 2 asteroids under control and started aiming to get more logistics slots,

In this situation, where you're just at the very early stages, I wouldn't worry about upgrading the logistics slots on the asteroids. Just make sure you upgrade the population infrastructure so these asteroids/planets are making money and not losing it. A bit later on, you can worry about upgrading logistics slots to drop whatever extra structures in there that you want (I think they have a default of 4 logistics slots, so you can immediately pop a tradeport on there if you want). At least, that's what I usually do.

Weapons are similar, a 10% damage upgrade to one weapon type isn't very much if you only have a few ships, and not all of them have that weapon type (Vasari phase missiles are a possible exception due to the first upgrade being so cheap and Assailants being so much better then Skirmishers).Personally if I'm going to upgrade early, its to unlock a couple of ship types (LRM, Flak), and then on the defensive side. The first hull upgrade is pretty cheap, and works on everything you make. The different tech trees have armor and shields in different spots, but an early upgrade to the cheaper of the two is also good, because again it works on every ship (armor also works on defensive structures).

I play Vasari, so I tend to do the missle upgrade quickly.

What new players need to wrap their heads around (and I do count myself in this designation much of the time) is that you always need to think about ships, upgrades and buildings in terms of "How much will this cost me now, how long will it take me to benefit from it and what am I giving up by picking A over B over C?"

Hi I saved my game and just to add I had a MUCH MUCH better game this time, started on a random huge map and I now see why some are against orbital refinarys to early since they cost a massive amount of credits. I adapted much better in this game, got cap ship, scuttled cap ship place, got 2 scouts on autoexplore, got extractors on asteriod fields and have taken 4 systems reasnably quick with my cap ship. I didnt stick to one thing, I got civ infrastructure maxed on my main planet got 4 civ buildings up on my planet and while waiting got a good lots of frigates and took to heart the advice about not having unused fleet slots, next I started getting some military points up(Cant remember all proper names yet :) ). I also done as suggested, kept expanding and in amongst all this I got attacked from pirates, I actually by this time had 1 point defense and took out the pirates with my fleet(Just had the perfect amount and as I was fighting them , built another point defense and spammed out some more frigs) By this time I had researched some hull and ballistics research upgrades and got some flak ships on the go for defense.

All the above got me checking the bounties more often and diplomacy , I ended up doing 3 missions and have a peace treaty with one race and put a higher bounty on the next race to keep pirates of muy back somewhat. Im finding it like one epic juggling act and Im worried my mid game may let me down so I saved, but I must admit its fun :) Kinda hectic since my start planet has like 3 phase lane entry points and adding that to my other planets its like a major amount of phase lanes to defend! One thing, when I put a bounty on AI do they know its me thats set pirates on them? and is there anyway I can find whos put a bounty on me? Class game, but it has me trying to think on so many levels its scary lol . In regards to the pirates well when I was fighting them the faction blue in colour(Cant remember which faction specifically) jumped in but I was winning against the pirates and the appeared to hang back, Im not sure if the ai is designed to be as smart as I think but Im wandering if the pirates had left me with little defenses if blue would have struck the coup de gra

Was TEC I went since I figured just start with them but I will try vasari soon. Another piece of info which was handy was what was mentioned about researching for volcanic and ice planets which I had to fit in as well since most of my closest planets to colonise were these types

Actually have one final thing to ask, say I look at the reports part on the bottom left then left click to get a report well which key to I need to press to get the game to immediatly jump to the origin or ship or structure in that report and zoom in on it? I thought it was the spacebar but that doesnt seem to work, still though and either way what a game :)
