Official Honor Harrington MOD request

Please!

So, after getting the mod thing to work, I am practically foaming at the mouth with the realization that this game is capable of mimicking the "Honor-verse" with about 80+% accuracy.

David Weber wrote a 10 book series about a character named Honor Harrington, and in this series was contained some of the most epic and fantastic space combat descriptions you could ever imagine based on a science fiction theme Mr. Weber came up with on his own.

Having said all that, i Know there has to be a few people on this forum who have read the Honor-verse series of books.  Making that assumption, is there Anyone who also finds the idea/concept of doing an Honor style MOD intriguing?  There is sooo much that could go into this mod and make this game produce the desired effect that it would be scary.!.  Mr. Weber's fan base is enormous and having said that, if there was a mod like the one that i conceive to be possible with this game, this game would explode with people wanting to play it.  People that don't even like video games would want to play this game with just this MOD if it was done correctly.

If anyone has questions about the specifics of what i would like to see with this mod, please ask away because i honestly don't even know where to begin.  It would help enormously if who ever attempted the mod was extremely familiar with the books to start out.

I'm going to stop now, before i break down and start sounding like a giddy school girl even more than i already am right now!   :SURPRISED: You folks take care have a good day and Gowd i hope to get some interest going for this mod!

Andy.

I just wrote a topic about this, it's on the next page.

Forum search option is your friend. But anyway, I agree with you. The problem is mainly the strict IP control that Honorverse copyright owners hold on the franchise.

I could be mistaken on this, but considering that a modification for a game would not be used for commercial purposes, you could likely create a mod safely using the 'Fair Usage' clause as described by copyright law.

Else all the mods out there based on Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Turtledove's World War/Colonization series, etc... would be potential lawsuits waiting to happen.

Just don't sell it.

Unfortunately anything you do with someone else's IP is subject to termination at their behest, even if it's not for profit.

I was an artist involved in the very short-lived Honorverse mod for Homeworld 2. It's actually my fault that got shut down, as there was some discussion on copyright permission and I suggested we just ask directly instead of living in constant fear that they might shut us down.

I figured if we came to them openly and expressed our love for the material and the fact that we aren't doing it for profit they wouldn't have a problem. Unfortunately I was wrong, and even a direct appeal to David Weber did no good.

As cool as an Honorverse mod for Sins would be good, it probably won't happen, and would be terminated pretty quickly if it did. The Honorverse IP is very strictly protected for reasons I don't really agree with (brand strength) and maybe some day they'll realize the error of their ways.

For my part, I ended up working with Ad Astra Games on their official Honorverse stuff, so it sort of worked out.

:SNIFF!: thats really really disapointing.. Mr. Weber is a gifted auther and the replies to this thread makes me want to :shakefist: at what ever reasons are behind the IP protections. :(

Mate Kodus on the art in SITS, great stuff. :D

what i suggest is just do it anyway...by time they probably catch wind of it....it could possibly be finished and on other's computers

just make sure though that it is fine though to use some individuals IP without there consent though for non-profit uses

Erm, clarification: DoV has inspiration from Turtledove but it's very loose and we've taken it in a different direction. Usage of an entire IP really isn't fair use in any legal or other sense.

Is it just the Honorverse that the publishers are touchy about? Or is it any of their IP's? If they seem less touchy about other ones then the universe of Crusade/Insurrection/In Dead Ground/The Shiva option might be better. Travel between stars is limited to what could be translated into phase lanes, and ships lack the impenetrable walls of the impeller wedge(which likely would have been difficult to add to the game engine as damage from certain areas does nothing). Plus, the different races have pretty similar tech, but each has different focuses/areas where they excel. Not quite the Honorverse, but I think it shows promise.

very true! not the honorverse.... however in my original post i did say it could come up to about 80% correctness of what the honor verse would look like using this game engine.

Sooo glad to see so many people familiar with the honor series! one of the best i've ever read.

I much rather have an Honorvese style mod than a "The Star at war" one, since assaulting defended wormhols can be a bit borring..... (after the first few times IMHO)

But, if we do make some kind of a mod based on "real" mechanics (and by we i mean you :HOT:) i can see several problems:

1.Making the star Gravity well big enought to encompas the enire star system while haveing a bunch of intractable objects in it, as i under stand this can't be done atm since we can't put to interactable object in 1 gravity well.

2.Coming right from the first point, huge grav wells will make moving from point to point very very s l o w, OTOH the simple solution to this will be to crank the acceleration of the ships up (way up) while making sure that thier top speed is allso way up.

3.The most problematic will be to implemant true Newtonian physics, this will require a compleat rewrite of the AI plus some tweaking of the game engien which i don't think that can be done.

Anyway, if someone do want to make this kind of a Newtonian mod to sins i'll be more than happey to consult (i'm an aerospace engineering student and an avid space operas reader) and even do some light codding after the end of semester.

Hasn't Weber concluded his Honor storyline? It seemed to be going in that direction. If so, perhaps the powers that be would be less touchy about things now.

Rest assured the the Honorverse still lives and will continue to be build upon in years to come.
Right now there are 3 novels of the series due to be published in 2008\2009 (CoS2 SoS2 HH12)
