Hosting a game? Make sure TCP & UDP port 6112 is open!!

Well, im so sick of almost every room being unjoinable. How hard is it to open a port? Seriously :P
Yeah i can just host a game myself, and thats what im doing all the time. But it'd be nice to actually get to Join a game sometime too :)

What kind of router do you have?

You do not need UDP! I've posted about this several times already. Try a "netstat" yourselves, you'll see NOTHING is listening on UDP.

Every game I've hosted I've only had TCP 6112 (game-port), and TCP 6000 (IC-online) forwarded from the router and opened in any/all firewalls. Works like a charm!

I'm curious as to the reason to pick port 6112 for game hosting. Blizzard uses port 6112 for it's World of Warcraft patch downloader.

In my home, we have 5 PCs which play WoW, so I use port triggering on 6112 to allow for all of the PCs to be able to download patches.

When I tried to host a Sins game, it informed me that triggering would not be sufficient. That's pretty obvious since I'd have to be accepting unsolicited incoming connections. My problem then becomes thus: do I forward port 6112 to my PC, thus breaking the ability for every other PC in the house to download WoW patches, or do I mess with my Sins configuration.

I did manage to find a setting in a Sins config file to change the host port, which I've done, so now both games can coexist peacefully. That said, when choosing a port, Ironclad probably should have done a bit more research and not picked one that's already used by possibly the most popular game in history.

For those wondering, the default port setting can be changed in your user.setting file. Check the Technology section of the official FAQ to find the location of that file.
