Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor

Second expansion pack coming soon...

Stardock is pleased to announce the second expansion pack to its award-winning PC strategy game Galactic Civilizations II.  The new expansion pack, entitled Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor, takes place shortly after the events of Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar and puts the player in control of one of 12 unique civilizations ranging from the humans to the evil Drengin to the mysterious Thalan.

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor aims to greatly expand the wealth of content available to Galactic Civilizations II players.  New features include the solar system destroying Terror Stars, unique technology trees per civilization, unique weapons per civilization, unique planetary improvements for different civilizations, a map editor with a 3D engine, a custom scenario editor that allows users to create extremely custom games that can be shared with each other, Metaverse tournaments, new graphics, special new ships with corresponding ship components and much more!

The expansion pack has a target release date of November 2007 and will list for $29.95.  Users can pre-order it directly from GalCiv2.com at a discounted price.  It requires Galactic Civilizations II: Gold Edition or Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar to be installed in order to use.

If there are only two civs alive, each has only one planet and both of those planets are in the same system, then if one civ blows up the solar system with a Terror Star, who wins?

To be asking such a question NOW, months before release, is pretty much a waste of bandwidth, young friend. The likelihood of it ever happening to anyone is something like getting struck by lightning while going into the lottery commission to collect your 1-player Mega-Millions payout, surviving to collect, then being hit in the street coming out by a pair of drag racing Model-T Fords.

Precisely.

Yea,,, I HATE when that happens.

Carriers would probably only be useful if someday the devs added stuff like, crew fatigue and moral for ships in space. Where they would need to be docked to keep their full battle strength or have to return to a friendly planet / starbase for a turn every so often.

With the new modules, especially the speed one, it seems that the effect will be the same as having carriers, even if they dont look like carriers.

Lol. IMO, carriers should have unlimited range and should be able to put all the tiny/small/medium fighters they carry into an unlimited-logistics battle force, with their carrying capacity being 100 tiny or 50 small or 20 medium ships. They could also have the capability of carrying up to 2 large/huge/cargo hulls that are not included as part of the battle fleet but are just being transported. They could also be used as a diplomatic deterrence by showing the ships they carry to be 20% more powerful than they are, and by reducing the chance of an AI resisting your actions in their sphere of influence.

Are the 'Terror Stars' gonna be one build only?
Because if the AI decided to build millions of the bastards, how the hell you gonna counter it?
And can you send a tiny little Star Fury on a suicide mission to destroy its exhaust port?
And, what kind of defenses will these beasts have or will they need to be escorted?

I don't think so. Instead of being '1 only', they'd probably be extremely expensive and extremely costly to maintain. They'll probably have some kind of Mk 5 Battle Stations and other special attack/defense modules, but starbases cannot defend themselves in the long run, and at 1 pc per week, this thing is just a starbase with a HyperDrive.

Of course you can send 1 Star Fury to attack it, but that would be suicidal. You do't get that degree of accuracy without researching 'the Force'.

They give you a third way of destroying the enemy: Dread Lords had Transports only, Dark Avatar brought along Spore Ships, and now, you have Terror Stars.

Are the TS's going to be like they were in GalcivI? Where you could soup the entire thing with all the starbase modules combined into one slow moving starbase? That would be powerful....but awesome.

It wouldn't be as powerful as late-game huge hulls are. It would be nice if they retained the range-extension and combat-assist capabilities of normal military starbases - that way, they'd be useful at any stage of the game.

A stupid question, but what happens to the planets when you blow up the sun with a terror star? Will they be destroyed, or slowly die? For example: If our sun blew up right now earth, mercury, and venus would be utterly destroyed. Mars might survive, but all the outer planets would still be present.

I hope the planets get converted into mine-able asteroids with the number of asteroids generated equaling the class of the destroyed planet. That would be some asteroid field! Of course, how does the Terror Star itself survive when planets can get destroyed?

Here's to hoping that you can cause the stars in an enemy's system to turn into black holes, or better yet Magnetars with the new Terror Stars!

That's ridiculous. Black holes aren't caused by supernovae, black holes are created when a star implodes with all the matter compressing under it's own gravity and becoming extremely dense, sucking in all surrounding matter and energy and becoming even denser. In supernovae, the star explodes and it's matter gets blasted off to form small nebulae that may later form into a new star.

I was thinking. If the devs are not making the expansion open beta, then could we get some dev reports? I will atleast provide us with some means to know what is going on, plus it would give us a means to cheer you guys on for good work. Also, it would provide us with a means to ask more specific questions about the expansion.

First, this new addon seems pretty nice... But I too have the problems some other people posted, no creditcard nor paypal-account . But maybe I'll change the latter one within the next months, mostly just for the GC2-addons...

Some good ideas, yes - but most importantly I'd point out that they would be useful as sort of an "logistics-bypass"-tech that way... The Devs always said carriers would have no use - now there IS one!

You're plain wrong there, sorry (I'm studying physics with astrophysics as partial focus so to say, so I do know a bit about this stuff) - Simply said, there are several different types of supernovae, with different end results.
Only in some cases literally everything is believed to be blown away (type 1a supernovae), while in other casess, there are remnants - white dwarfs, neutron stars (of which a specific class are magnetars) or, if enough mass remains, even black holes.

So, basically, a black hole COULD be formed by a supernova (while there are also quite several other ways for this to happen, and also SOME supernovae don't leave anything behind).

While browsing through wikipedia for a bit additional info I couldn't find elsewhere, I also saw some rather unheard-of theoretical ideas that might be nice in a scifi-game like this :
"black dwarfs", essentially white dwarfs that have cooled down so far that they aren't visible anymore (though this propably would take a lot longer then the current age of the universe);
"quark stars" which would practically be the equivalent of neutron stars, just denser (where it nowadays isn't clear if there would be a force able to stabilize them, i.e. stop them from collapsing to a black hole);
and something I forgot the name of, but basically again the same, just with theoretically thought of sub-components of quarks (though there would be pretty big theoretical problems about the existence of such "components").

Basically, it'd add more variability; and also I'd like to see my survey ships being able to "learn" from such rather unusual objects just the way they do from "anomalies" right now - be it by applying some bonus, generating research points, or even triggering complex events.

Thank you for reading .

No open beta? That's a pity, that'd have been a big inducement for me to pre-order the game - I liked the fact that those who preordered Dark Avatar got a chance to play the beta version before the full release. But, I can understand the reasons behind not having an open beta too.

Still, two months before we get that sweet Twilight of the Arnor goodness? I'm going to have a hard time waiting! x_x Must...not...go...crazy...

Now thats a chance in Hell!!!

Do note that paypal doesn't work for preorders. If you want to get some other games on TGN (or don't mind spending more now and saving the extra tokens for later) though, you can buy tokens with paypal then preorder with tokens.

Kyro,

Just to let you know that when I pre-ordered the new game it did bring up the paypal option... not that I used it but it did have it there.

Once gain no multiplayer we were promised multiplayer if the first expansion sold well. It sold very well and now we've been stabbed in the back. Oh and Terror stars and solar systems were suppose to be in the original game anyways. So I have this to say. I want a third expansion and I want it to be all about multiplayer. I am tired of them making promises and not delivering. And you could at least release a MP patch so the modders can work on it.

It was said that multiplayer would be considered for the second expansion if DA did well and the demand was sufficient. As Brad noted in the Gamespot interview, the demand was not sufficient (regardless how vocal those demanding it may be).

And you could at least release a MP patch so the modders can work on it.

It's been said too many times to count that multiplayer is too much to put in a patch, and it'd take source code access to do anything of that sort besides.

Hey...maybe it's time for another one of Brad's innovative, new customer support models. At least, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Naw, what I was talking about was even crazier. I was suggesting making DLL's available to the expert user base and letting them mod that with source code. And then maybe having some mechanism for sucking user changes in to the Stardock "blessed" source code. Thus Stardock effectively gets free man-hours of work from gaming enthusiasts, along with another source of resumes. It'll probably never happen.

I total agree with the need to change the ground combat screen. though I would really love to see more than just a new face on it. I mean I am not asking Stardock to reinvent the wheel or anything but some neat changes like having the battle be effected by teched researched.

I think the example before was plasma weapons and your troops guns change and are more effective. I also think that the invasion tactics should be shown, like to see what the micro bot attack would look like.

I would also like to see the invasion tech tree fleshed out more than just space marines and advanced troop pods. Now this might be addressed with the new tech trees for each faction thing. I just hope it is something being considered as the stardock team creates the new trees.

Also please add more ship parts/componants. I mean DA was a good start but you cant have enough parts. Maybe they should have some themes to them like industrial punk or irovy mystical, maybe something greek or eygptian mythology elements. I liked some moves in DA there was the more luminesant stuff but why not flesh that out and have a almost organic type ship perhaps one of the faction could go that route like the Mon Calamari from Star Wars that had ship hulls that were grown instead of built, I mean it could be purely kinestic or with some bonus features, such as reduced build time or cost.

Also, this might be hard to put into practice but the scale seems off. My huge ships just dont feel huge. I guess I am talking about 1) the scale is not enough. 2) Huge ships should not fly around like fighters in battle but rather should creep along slowly exchanging fire with each other. 3) huge ships are more streamline the huge ships sometimes come off small in design not what one might expect from a captial ship or the large or huge scale, again not all of them some are good.

Final thing,
What is the chance of stardock fleshing out the pics for the minor races. Maybe add some concept pics to factions that did not make the cut. Maybe work on a better randomization of who gets used. I am getting alittle put off by having the same old faces staring back at me as far as minor races go. Also a question how will the new tech trees effect minor races, will they have standard tech trees or randomly assigned new ones?

I was getting excited about buying and playing this game until I realized it didn't have a multiplayer option available also. Some times I like to play strategic games versus my brother and friends. I don't understand the thought process of not having multiplayer available.

There are other stragetic space games out there that do have multiplayer capabililty, I guess I will have to buy one of them instead.

Looked like a fun game. Oh well.
