Regarding ship designs new/upgraded

Just getting acquainted with the ship designer. During my last game I upgraded and designed a couple of ships and now when I started another game those designs were there. However I tought I noticed that some of newer components were missing (as they should be because research hasn't advanced that far yet, anyway I'm not 100% sure what happened because I didn't make notes about my design changes). So my questions are:
Does the game keep track when the research has advanced far enough and turns the new components on ?
Does the game hide those (user) shipdesigns that are too "modern" and put them back to the list when research has advanced ?
There probably is a thread answering beginners shipdesign questions, could someone point it to me please.

I'm not sure if there's a thread on it, but like the core ships your desighns should show as tech becomes available. that a reason not to replace same name upgrades(I add G-2,G-3 so on). So when you get the tech in turn your models matching should show.If you saved a design with Lasers V though, the entire design shouldn't show till you have the tech.
