Do you type words or letters?

How fast are you?

I've read that the key to increasing your keyboarding speed is to type words not letters. I'm working on it but it's hard. It seems like instead of reversing a few letters I type a completely wrong word, which I think is worse.

I took a test here Link

Here are my results:

Test Name: Strategic Alliances with Competitors
Gross Speed 68 WPM
Errors 30 words
Net speed 58 wpm

How about you?

I'm unable to do it because of something technical, but I know I type words unless it is a word I am not familiar with.

No idea - I just type what's on the screen, one letter after the other. My results anyway were:

Test Name: Tigers in the Wild
gross speed: 79wpm
errors: 3 words
net speed: 76wpm
accuracy: 96%

But I used to work doing transcription, so I needed a high typing speed and accuracy just to do my job.

Hmmm...I thought that I typed faster than that.  I guess I suck at touch typing or something (I don't typically type something that I'm reading)

I know that I type faster on different computers. For instance, my sister has one of those desks that has the folding tray and wooden chair. It's so uncomfortable. But at home and at work, with the adjustable seating, it really makes a difference.

No tips really. I just have long skinny fingers and have been typing pretty much every day since 7th grade.

Hi Alex! Did you take the test? How'd it go?

This is about average for me. I usually type faster depending on when Im typing...type faster at certain times of the day...etc. Although...Ive been away from a computer for a couple of weeks as well so Im rusty.

Best ways to increase speed: 1. lots of practice! 2. mastery of the language and excellent spelling. If you're a good speller, you SEE and TYPE a word as a word, without thinking about the sequence of letters that comprise it. If you struggle with spelling, you will naturally be more focused on a stringing together the right letters. Make sense?
