Some ideas for future versions

Warning: I haven't read every post in every subforum, so I might be suggesting things that already have been proposed.

- Fighters. Not like the tiny and small hull sizes, but rather as a fourth weapon type. For attack there'd be bombers, and for defense interceptors. Offensive techs would be better bombs/torpedoes, defensive techs some kind of fighter-based weapon (possibly advancing with normal weapon techs, so your highest level weapon tech would actually determine the effectiveness of your fighter defense; so there'd be laser fighter bays, missile fighter bays and gun fighter bays).

- If there's going to be bombers, there should be proper planetary bombardment as well. Do away with the current attack choices for ground combat, and make the player choose between no/light/medium/heavy bombardment, resulting in a bigger advantage for higher collateral damage.

- Icons for capitals (as in manufacturing capital, not capital ships), for identifying them on the map.

That's all I can think of right now. Feel free to discuss any of this (in a civilized manner, of course).

NO PLANETARY BOMBARDMENT. Gaaargh!
It has been discussed many, many, many times. And they aren't here anymore (terror stars that is). There will be no planet nuking except for invasions. You want to bomb the enemy, use planetary bombardment. And no carrier ships, no 4th weapon type. Argh, horrible gameplay. If it came along I'm sure many people would remove them instantly by disabling all the techs involved. I certainly would.

Icons for capitals are a good idea though.

I'm afraid I don't quite follow you with the bombardment thing, especially the 'You want to bomb the enemy, use planetary bombardment' line. With the planetary bombardment I meant instead of the invasion options you have now, which seem a bit arbitrary to me.

And for the fourth weapon type, why would that mean horrible gameplay? Would you mind explaining why exactly that would ruin the game? I can imagine just adding a fourth weapon type and a fourth armor type might be a bit boring, but having the defense for that weapon be depending on the other weapon techs could be very interesting, in my opinion.

Oh, and glad you agree on the capital icons thing
