Best way to start?

I was looking at a map and I saw a lot of planets in or near my area. As I colonized it showed more yet more planets. Colonized...more planets....colonized...more planets. Then there was a class 27 planet? omg.

So, should I rapidly keep expanding or at some point stop and secure what I have? How do you guys handle this?
