Why does it seem as if AI doesn't follow the ship range limitation?

I am finally playing a game where I am winning, thanks to lowering the number of habitable planets. I just realized though, that early on in the game, the AI has colonies everywhere on the map. I however am limited to the area that my ships can travel.

How is that?

It it the same AI all over the map? I assume different AI's have colonized different areas based on their starting position.

Starbases increase range, so it is possible the AI has built one or two to extend range.

They colony hop, they resdesign their ships for extended range, they build starbases and extend their range etc..

Yes, I've noticed the AI tend to fill the leftover space on their ships with life-support. If you get bored zoom in on a scout you've spotted miles from anywhere - you'll probably be able to see the life-support modules. I believe in 1.0x10 there was some tweaking to get the AI to focus less on range in it's design.

I've noticed this in the campaign game when I was fighting the dreadlords, they were flying all over the map without having any colonies of SBs... I find that a bit odd. This also seems to be true of their sensor range, they spotted a undefended colony 3 SECTORS away from their homeworld and sent a transport straight to it. Thats just messed up I also had a frigate go straight to a ship sitting 3 sectors from their world. I can't believe it, before I was able to hide just outside their sensor range, but since the patch that trick doesn't work.... These were fighters and Escorts doing this not ship big enough to have great speed and sensors.

Hello!!! You are talking about the DRead LOrs, the masters of space, the inventors of life itself, the ones who created the Yors, the ones who use Drengin for dog races, what do you expect?...

The DReadlors are a mistery in itself, we have found only few clues about them, so stay close and pay attention to the nex expansion the Dark Avatar coming in the fall of 2006....

The Yor were constructed by the Iconians. The Dread Lords reprogrammed the Yor to hate all organic life. What the campaign says and what IGN has differ somewhat though.

I had a minor race send a constructor ship across nine sectors to build an influence base next to Earth.

During the first year of the game. Naturally, I declared war.

However, it took me THREE years to build sufficient life-support to be able to scout the location of their homeworld. It took another six months before my warships could get there. It was a relatively short war... well, OK, maybe not short once it was declared. But quite short once the shooting started.

Granted, I wasn't using starbases to effectively increase my range. And that situation was several patches ago. So I don't know that's even an issue anymore.
