What's wrong with the AI

Hi everyone! I'm not getting as "good" an experience as I would of expected. I'm playing on "Normal" so the AI is supposed to be working as hard as it can.. At this moment, I've completly beat an AI who, had more planets, similar production, and better weapons technology.

The reason it was a cakewalk is that the AI was building these piddly light-fighters with 1massdriver and nothing else. It had the technology to create at least a 4massdriver heavy fighter (as that's what I was using), and I know he has the same (or better) weapons technology because I had the option of trading from him the massdrivers that I'm using now. It ended up bankrupting itself buying these pitiful junky ships.

Does anyone know what could of happened? I'm playing with the newest patched version, that I D/Led yesterday. I'm feeling kinda jipped...

You know...there are so many post like this on this site you begin to wonder if people have some horrible aversion to reading the manual.

Hate to say it bud, but RTFM! pal.

Citizen Morose, AI is playing the best game it's playing at INTELLIGENT difficulty; so don't blame the game for being stupid because you tuned the difficulty down.

First. The AI DOES NOT cheat. It optimizes the things it does. Where you may not raise your taxes when optimum morale is attained the AI does. If you play with the all AI at intellegent it is as close to a human as posible. At levels higher than intellegent the AI does gain advantages. Mainly from increased tax collection. There have been numerous posts about this already and some forum browsing will reward you with a tremendous amount of info.

Try the AI at "Intelligent", which is the "fair" setting.

The manual is pretty clear on what the different intelligence levels mean.

I thought it was at "intelligent" that full AI and balanced resources with the human player was used?

I'm pretty sure "normal" AI only gets 75% resources of the human player, but I'm not sure if it uses full AI routines.

To be fair MrMorose, the difficulty settings are at the tail end of the manual, perhaps he just didn't notice them. I had to load up the PDF version to catch it. I'm afraid these old eyes just can't read the mini font they used in that table!

I thought Tough was the AIs best setting, without gettting any cheats?

There are two different settings: The one for each individual AI and the overall difficulty setting. They influence each other (i.e. cranking up one will automatically adjust the other). If you set the overall difficulty to "Though", then all individual AIs are set to "Intelligent" and that's the setting where they are equal.
