What's the Early game like(BETA TESTERS)

So what's this games' early part. Is it rushing to the damn colony ships and forgeting about productivity , like the "CIV 3 settler rush pandemic"or is it about keeping the economy strong and then expanding later like CIV4.

it's a bit of both - yes the grab is very competitive, but if you grab too much, it's easy to go broke trying to keep it all. stabalising your economy is a *very* important part of the early game. even the AI has to do it.

I found it a lot slower than how I was used to playing in GC1. It was not worse, just different. It also felt more "zoomed in" than GC1. It was like looking at pieces on a chessboard in 1; in 2 it is more like getting briefings from the Admiralty. And yes, getting your economy rolling is obviously critical, but it was in 1 as well. Though this time, it is all about specialized planets (like Civ IV's cities).

GC1 was a speed game where as GCII is more aimed at a longer play. I have never been one for micro-management, however now you can pretty much decide how much you want to manage and how much to let the computer take over for you!! The ship building and design are fantastic too and very easy to use to boot. You will find yourselves spending huge amounts of time lovingly putting the finishing touches to your new strike cruiser, only to habe it blown-up by the Draginol as soon as they see it Luckily the game saves the designs if you want it to
And that is just scratching the surface

Thanks Darth Griffin for most informal post. This cleared most of my worst expectations about the GalCiv2.

Yeah you don't want to overextend yourself and push your economy into negative BCs if you can help it. It takes a bit of time to get new colonys working (not draining your funds). However, I would still rush to the juicy PQ planets. Overcolonizing is bad tactic, and it is similar to Civ4 that way. Only if your playing on low difficulty can you recover in time. The AI colonizes well but doesn't overdo. Also rush on resources is a must, if you don't you may find a starbase of another race.

Colony maintenance is expensive in the Beta 5 but according to Brad the costs have been reduced in the final release.

The game is a success, a lot different from the original GC-I, more interesting, more features and longer, the campaign option is a great addition, the Metacerse is looking better, the whole medals, empire screen are redone in a beautiful way, the AI is better and there are more options that really make the game a beautiful thing.
