AI and Anomalies and Relics--2.0

Gents (and Ladies?),

Apologies if this has been addressed. I don't go to the forum too often.

I come back to this game on occasion after updates to check it out, and one thing that still disappoints me is that AI races build very few relic starbases and they don't seem to touch anomalies (at least they leave a lot lying around). This hasn't changed in 2.0 on an insane map and genius difficulty with eight other races.

I recall in GalCiv2 that the AI seemed to know where relics and anomalies were and were on them usually before I had a chance to do anything. Although frustrating, it made for challenging game play.

is the solution to fire up a game without anomalies or relics in order to preserve some balance?

Cheers,

Capt. Beefheart

Hay Capt.  The AI seems to do a good job at chasing down anom's and building relic star bases ** at least in my games.  I will say i have seen it leave a "few" anom's and relics alone into the late game but early-mid game i am in a race to get to them before the AI.  I play with both on normal .  Turn the FOW off and >soak and you can watch the AI gobble them up.   OH, what difficulty level are you playing on? I never play below genius (and up).  This MAY have an impact but not sure.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure the AI races were set to Genius. I'll doublecheck.

At the end of an Alliance victory I was cruising through Allied territory scooping up capsules and even the odd artifact. Also, my allies had about 2-3 relics with starbases each, with plenty of unclaimed relics nearby. The only thing holding me back was the new Admin feature, which is a good feature in my opinion.

Cheers,

In my games too, the AI seems to ignore most, if not all anomalies. I play gifted mostly, dunno if that's WAD or if it would change on higher...

I play also on gifted and it seems to me that the AI mostly ignores anomalies and relics. But I set usually anomalies to uncommon and relics to rare so that I don't see much of them anyway and so I cannot be entirely sure.

Based on my game play/observations, the AI has no issues going after resources but since 2.0 they seem a little less interested in artifacts and anomalies and I think this is intentional so players won't get too frustrated by having the AI gobble up all the artifacts. They do go for the anomalies but not as often as the resources. I usually play with gifted AI, though my first play through with 2.0 was on normal to see what changes I could notice with the AI so this may have some affect on my observations, provided their behavior is also affected by their intelligence level. Only the developers know for sure. ;)

This weekend I just finished a post 2.0 game with all gifted AI, and they were definitely giving me way more challenge than before.  I got beat twice  (stupid Krynn) before I switched up my normal strategy. I play with lots of analomies / relics and they were definitely going after them, and lost out on some before I could get to them. I stupidly traded interstellar survey and the Torian started sweeping up.

They didn't go after shipwrecks, but then again, I stay away from them as well.

Yes, but there were more anomalies in two

I see the AI gathering anomalies, but nowhere near as aggressively as I do.  I believe they have a paradigm of getting unprotected anomalies first before surveying protected ones.  They do claim relics, but the action is very hit or miss.  Relics out in the void are seldom claimed.  Often, there are relics in an AI territory that I find unclaimed after crossing the whole galaxy. Occasionally, they are within 10-15 tiles of a planet.  So, I claim them and then they get mad at me.  I tell them I just can't resist temptation, but I don't think it is convincing them of anything. I have relics at occasional and still, I get to claim a great deal of relics because they are so ignored.

They are eager to claim clusters of multiple resources.  I approve of that to an extent, but I think they overdo it.  I have a bunch of Durantium mines in this game because I am going to try doing a bunch of missile augments.  I am not sure I really need augments in this game.  It is exceptionally peaceful.  But just in case they surprise me, I will be ready.  That's as close to needing a ton of resources as I have gotten.  So, two or three clusters of resources seems to be enough for my needs so far.  Also, I have learned to leverage claiming a relic and using range extensions to dual purpose those starbases.  Either they act as Mining Rings for nearby resources, or better yet, as an Econ Ring for a nearby planet.  That is a trick the AI should learn.

I think the AI resource/relic claiming is still improving.  It needs a little more balance in priorities and awareness of range extensions.  And it can't leave relics unclaimed in its own territory while still hunting down all those resources!!!  The administrator hard caps and such are still in flux, but planning ahead for them needs to be learned by the AI as well as we humans.  We'll see what happens, but I do expect that we'll see more progress in this area. When that progress happens is anyone's guess.
