Starbase auto-upgrade: how are they supposed to work?

Is that supposed to be entirely automated, from the first module/first contructor ordered, the bases will auto-upgrade by themselves in the future?

I seem to have lots of problems with this, and I'm beginning to wonder if it's simply me who doesn't understand the mechanics of this new system.

Early on, my bases will order the upgrades needed, but at a certain point, it will stop, and I need to manually go to each starbases and select all the modules I want.

It seems to happen with mining and archeological starbases so far (I haven't played enough with 1.7 to make more observations).  Once the first mining module is constructed, it is reported as being already mined.  So the constructors needed to upgrade it further will never be ordered.  If there's already a constructor in orbit with leftover modules, it will never be used.

What's more is that at this point, even armament modules (beams, missiles, armor, etc) are not ordered.  I need to go to that starbase, double click on each module to push the upgrade.  Even if I just upgrade up 'til I need to order a new constructor, the upgrades will never be performed once the new constructor arrives.

I have filed ticket #TRH-222-14763, but I'd appreciate feedback from fellow users.

Since 1.71 I know I have to start the upgrade process off manualy(I think it is off by default) by checking Auto upgrade then clicking the little star icon next to it to apply to all starbases. After that they seem to upgrade just fine. By default starbases will only que 2 upgrades at a time, set in the xml this way. A starbase will not order for "new" modules only modules you have manualy installed that can be upgraded, you still have to start new modules off manualy.

Saying all that, I do not use mining bases (Modded so any base can mine) and I can not say for certain if mining get upgraded or not, as there is usualy other modules qued first(eco or military stuff) and I usualy manualy select the mining upgrades if and when I need them.

If you have a mining base, the next 'mining' module will or should be automatically cued up at the primary star base.

You can change who sponsors the mining bases. You can also do this globally although I am not sure the global change button is working.

If you wanted to add, say a 'beam weapons' module, you need to click on it and that and click on other modules you want this base to add. I have found this is handy to fortify mining bases that have 3+ resources attached to them.

I'm doing that, re-doing it every once in a while, but it just doesn't seem to upgrade after a while.

ah, that could be part of the problem.
