Is Influence the same as Diplomacy?

I asked this question in another string, but I thought I might get a better response putting it in the title. If embassies help relations via influence, is influence tied to diplomacy?

Do influence improvements also improve your diplomatic status? Do they keep others from declaring war, threatening, or demanding tribute and tech? Is that the purpose of influence, or is it merely to grow your boarders?

Influence affects the size of the influence borders displayed on the map.   Diplomacy affects the general attitude of AI players.  They do not directly affect each other except for things like close borders and intrusions into influence areas affecting diplomatic attitudes negatively.

If anything, more influence will harm your diplomatic relations.
