So next year, I am going to see if I can manage a 6900K and build a new system around that!

Does anyone know if Skylake is going to move up to 6 or 8 core variants?
From the information available at the moment it looks like Kaby will still be 4 core only so Skylake is likely to remain as is I would think. It also looks like Kaby will be out very late next year so if you want to wait for it then you may have to wait some time. I could be wrong on all of the above though as no one knows for sure.
Considering the platform they released for Skylake, I wouldn't expect it to go beyond four cores. They've pretty majorly shafted it on the chipset side of thing, it's well below the X99's maximum output. I expect you'll have to wait for cannonlake to see a serious entry in the skylake architecture. The enthusiast market is all Haswell/Broadwell refresh for next year, the X99 chipset has all the bells and whistles right now as far as future proofing goes. The die shrink will let them do a lot more with the Skylake architecture, hopefully, and they'll put out a proper enthusiast chipset to go with it.
Thanks for the support Island Dog. I had my eye set on the rig Paul uses with his 4k monitor.
If you want more than 4 physical cores in a current CPU, you're going to want Broadwell-E.
