0.51 All I want is an alliance, please

Medium map with all 5 races. I'm Terrans and have researched all Diplomacy techs through Age of War. Everyone is Overjoyed with me. I have three +'s for having a better diplomacy score than everyone. Yet none of the trade windows is showing me the option of making an Alliance, not even the Iridium, with whom I've traded all of the diplomacy techs. All I want is to make an alliance, something I've been unable to do since the start of beta 2. Is there some trick I'm missing? Some hidden prerequisites I need to meet?

Your partner needs to have researched the alliance tech as well. I believe it would work if you gave it to them as a gift (and then waited a turn). IMO, the whole "research treaties" thing is quite silly, but de rigueur for this type of game it seems. At the very least it should be possible to offer an alliance that you have researched, whether or not the counterparty has done so.

I believe the idea is to make gateways so that more powerful alliances are the reward for investing in the diplomacy tree. It feels very artificial and forced.

The Iridium have had all the alliances techs for several turns now Because I gave those to them.

If it shows on your side that means they're ready, you give them the alliance and you are allies.

It does not show on either side.

I got Alliance to eventually show up. Mission accomplished! Now why did it take so long? I have two theories:

#1 Our relations have to stew for a while

#2 The competitor has to be in Age of War or beyond

I strongly suspect #2, but haven't proved it yet.

I experienced the same thing, described in another thread.  Like you, I also ended up giving the alliance techs to the AIs, and the option to form an alliance didn't appear until several (some might say many) turns later.  The conditions for forming an alliance definitely need to be made more transparent to the player.
