Irony: In a game about magic....

.... it's far easier to build a military empire and win

Ok, I would like to hear people's thoughts on this aspect of the game.

I wanted to make a magic-based elven sort of race so I used the ones that get +1 to move and gave them Enchanters, Scouts and Decalon with no armor as a penalty.

Then I gave my leader Air, Earth and Life magic and Brilliant (on a side note: does Attune give +2 mana a level or just +2 mana?) and Pricopee's Circlet (don't know how to spell her name)

Then, when the game began I quickly expanded to 8 cities all of which had at least 3 essence once I built my Essence Pool.  Four had 4 essence.

I then had them research the magic branch while taking Warfare and Civics up about 4 steps (enough for leather armor, town halls).... then I thought: now I'll make my mages and their storm hammer protectors..... WRONG.  Why?  Because with 4 Crystal Mines - more than any other resource I possessed I get a ..... whopping .5 crystal every turn for a grand total of 2!!!! a season.  Which means every 8 seasons I can build ONE unit.

So I then researched whatever gives me the first hammer and made a non-magical unit and shortly began kicking AI butt which I would have done about 100-150 seasons ago but thought I'd make a cool magic wielding race......

I find it ironic that it is so easy to churn out a military based society that dominates while pursuing magic seems like folly ..... I realize I can beat the AI by playing smart but it gets tedious adding 200-300 seasons on a huge map with max opponents on Challenging or above to take all the extra time....

Thoughts?   Am I doing something wrong?  Do crystal mines need changed?

Crystal Quarry (0.5 / season)

Crystal Mine (1.0 / season)

Crystal Trove (2.0 / season)

&

Amethyst Vault (2.0 / season)

This, there are various techs which allow you upgrade the crystal quarry to produce more. If you are to rely on magic items they are a must. IIRC (haven't playe d in like a year) They are all part of the magic tree. Which means you likely had them you just didn't upgrade the quarry. Course my memory could be faulty and they could be part of civics.. meh.

Where is an irony? In a game about magic you wanted to make legions of mages? Even in the "Lord of the Rings" there were only few of them. So be patient, make common units. You'll have your chance for mages.

Need to upgrade them crystal mines, Crystal Troves give 2 crystal a turn.

As for magic based units, there's not very much of them unless you're playing as monsters/ruffians :P

And heroes is quite focused on magic if you focus on mages.

But for human units, there's mages, Paladins and maybe Chosen? i've only played as kingdom so far so i dunno yet about empires xD

And honestly, that's not very surprising.

Magic requires even more development than just giving a spear to your peasant and tell him to fight for you.

But don't kid yourself, advanced melee units can get quite expensive as well. Its very noticable when you start to wear metal armor instead of leather. To be fair, crafting metal armor and weapon took alot of work in real life as well.. so it makes sense :P

And if you want to make magical based society,, then another thing you must worry about is your mana production XD I should know.. sometimes I go through 500 mana in a single turn because I like keeping my troops alive with heal spells lol when there's tons of battles in a single turn.
