Suggestion: Intermediate Steps between Leather and Chain Armor

Right now, i feel like there is too large a gap between leather and chain type armors. Most of my units use leather based armors for the majority of my games.

Further, i know there is also discussion that iron isn't used quickly enough and tends to stockpile. So perhaps we can kill two birds with one stone.

The idea:

1) Create a studded leather armor gained a blacksmithing that would exist between leather and chain type armor. This armor would have an iron cost.

2) Move the braided belt closer in the tech tree, so that units with chain proficiency can get some use sooner and also have a need for iron.

Really a nice idea. I quite like it.

This is somewhat easy to mod, I was already thinking of making some Heavy Plate Armor to deal with Iron stockpiles late game. Also braided belt does not require chain armor ;)

How about magical leather?

Another idea would be drakehide leather, obtained by drake camps or killing dragon race.

I have modded in hide and studded leather into my current mod to do that very thing i wanted an armor with slightly more defense than leather and have added those two. i had also contemplated adding in magical leather and the drake idea to bridge the gap even more. been modding a bunch of new items.  The core game does nedd a better way of handling the gap tho.

The Arcane Armour tech should have a magical leather option along side...

I like the concept, but it would need to be fleshed out in conjunction with all the other armour classes already existing.

Are you refering to linear assignment? ie: Leather -> Studded Leather -> Chainmail -> Platemail

or are you refering to an alternate? ie: Instead of Leather, receive Studded just like instead of Chainmail, receive Scalemail.

We sorta kinda have an intermediate step now, but it isn't fully implemented.

You have your Cloths, Leathers, Chains and Plates

Cloth/Padded is the one that isn't well implemented if you think about it.  Another way to think of this is the 'Rolemaster' approach.  In that game, you have your soft leathers, rigid leathers, chains and plates.

So your Cloth/Soft Leathers would have a base protection of 1 (2 for torso), your rigid leathers would have 2 (4 for torso), Chains usually now have 3 (6 +/- for torso) and Plates have 4 (8 +/- for torso).  Actually, there is a lot of variability in the chains and plates, but you get the idea.

The current values are fairly close to this, so introducing 'hard leather' boots and such would accomplish this, which is pretty much what the OP is getting at I think.
