Targeting priorities - my biggest gripe

One thing that has been driving me nuts recently is targeting priorities - ie which target ships choose to attack. Basically, the problem is that trade ships rank above structures. But if you are attacking a planet with a developed economy, especially one on a trade lane, trade and refinery ships are constantly jumping in and out. Your ships, especially strike craft, go after these irrelevant trade ships instead of structures.

I frequently have sent ships into a grav well, seen that there are no attack issues and gone off to check something else. I come back expecting that they've destroyed most of the civ structures. In fact they've done sod all because they spent all their time going after the trade ships.

Please make structures a higher priority than civilian ships - this is driving me nuts.

Since we're on the subject, changing the target priorities on strike craft when a mine-laying drone host is in the area would be nice, too.  In several instances, I've zoomed to a well in my control to find 20 squads of strike craft hovering around a drone-host, apparently trying to take a shot at the unplaced mines that it has in tow.  They wouldn't go after anything else until I issued a specific attack order.

But I agree with the above - trade ship priorities are a complete nuisance, too.  Not meaning to derail but honestly, going beyond the targeting issues, why are they even in the game?  Aside from making pirates and unit control a little more irritating and contributing to lag, what are they for?

On this subject, I think flak should target corvette's before strikecraft.

This I agree with.  This one seems to be a bugger...and two fold. Especially vs. structures that can phase.  It makes that part of the game un-fun.

I force my ships to focus fire on a structure, they attack...it phases out and then they all head out to the outer edge of the grav well to take out the newly arrived trade ship that will jump before they can get to it.  <_<

Then I force my ships to focus fire on a structure, they attack...it phases out and then they all head out to the outer edge of the grav well to take out the newly arrived trade ship that will jump before they can get to it. :annoyed:

This is true, but in the essence of realism your fleet captains should be smarter than that. In your absence they should have better attack priorities than trade ships.
