Modders MP Zone

Archive of the pros versus modders game and current MP setup thread

As most of us know, there are two main communities in Sins of a Solar Empire, one for multiplayer and one for modding. Bar the occasional group of friends playing a mod on ICO together however, these two communities rarely interact with each other, besides occasional discussions of game balance.

Therefore I propose a little icebreaker in the true Sins fashion, complete with the typical disintegration of metal, screams of nuked worlds, and if we're lucky even the rare space pony sighting, that we've all come to know and love, regardless of which form of Sins we get most of our entertainment from. Yes, I think its time for the first ever Pro Player vs Modders MP game!

Of course as we are meeting in the Pro player's home court, I think in the interest of a semi-interesting game the modders will need a team advantage of some sort. Any ideas on the exact number of players on each team as well as the best time to arrange this will be welcome (I'd guess sometime on Thanksgiving weekend). And of course, if you're interested do let us know.

I'd like to have one pro player sort of be in charge of the logistics of making the game who promises to be there, presumably if any of the other pros don't show we can find substitutes at the game launch. As modders don't often log on to ICO don't commit unless you're sure you can make it at whatever time we agree on. Also if possible I think it would be nice for as many different mods as possible to be represented, but obviously filling the roster comes first.

I would not claim myself as a modder. Im more of a tester.

Are we doing any mods?

If so we should be clear which one and make sure everyone has them preloaded.

It just surprises me that making a graphics mod entitles you to be a modder and making a new map for the game doesn't. It seems very elitist. Particle Forge is in and Galaxy Forge is out, obviously! Serious? However perhaps the 'mappers' should have their own team. Star released a map once, I can prove it....
End of DesConnor's quote

I could be mistaken, but genuinely new particles require you to make new textures and other art assets. If a map maker made a map with new planets they mad, they'd most certainly be a modder. Though really for this purpose its just semantics as we don't have enough modders by any definition who've said they are both willing and able to play.

Also.. watching the pretty explosions in a 3 vs 1 is so much better than watching the explosions in SP or a more even 4 vs 4?? I just dont get this. What are you talking about? As was pointed out, 3 vs 1 you can just be overwhelmed by numbers, what is supposed to be interesting about it?
End of DesConnor's quote

Well I don't know what you're talking about here either!  People wanted the replays, I uploaded them, whether or not you find it interesting is up to you. The reason why graphics mods and the like are popular because in single player many players like to watch the game as much as play it, as we all agree the AI doesn't give enough of a challenge to force them to always be giving orders.

The added human factor in multiplayer is always infinitely more interesting than in games against the AI, in my opinion.

This is dinstinctly where DesConnor, yourself and other pros differ from most of the rest of us, myself and my LAN crew anyways. We like to drink beer, leave the computer in game for ten minutes to use the bathroom and get something to eat, come back to it, laugh and joke over teamspeak and go 'oh shoot I have 60k credits ... I guess I should build something.' etc etc ... all during a 14 hour slow setting marathon comp stomp. You keep trying to boil it down to numbers and balance etc etc. I could care less if I'm getting run over by a pro player or if I'm building more civ stations than I need to at a given time. It's fun, completely relaxed, it is what it is.

You guys need to chill out. You're so wound up and I'll never understand why. :w00t:

Waal Lil' Bosh, how in heck did ya and ya Trophy Bass 3D buddies end up in an RTS game?  Shoot, ah like to cheel as much as any other dood.  Jest ah cheel at a BBQ or ova nachos and fitball, or snipin me some crittas.  Ya dig?

RTS games seem to me to demand some kind of activity, just the nature of the beast I guess.  You ever score much on Space Invaders with your laidback approach?  'Shoot, darn blown up again, anyone got a quarter?'  I mean, your attitude could apply to any game.  You can go to the bathroom when you are supposed to be playing any kind of video game.  Unless there is something deeply pleasing about a Sins dump?  Restroom Time Strategy....

I always wondered who played Trophy Bass 3D now I know.  Anyway I will be more impressed by the fun guy laidback modders who dont ragequit, throw in the towel and give away their credits, desperately try to snipe just one cap to prove something, or try to prove that at least they were somewhat harder to kill than their teammates.  That's because those are attitudes typical of noob multiplayers, some of whom mature as players, others tend to give up.  But I reckon you have me and the pros wrong, nobody minds that kind of attitude as long as they don't have to team with it, as long as there are no noob GG fails that is.  At least you modders have no balanced team noobs.. hell, apart from the three to one game, damn my uptight bones.

Good luck Sel, and dont forget to pack your maggots....

So you just don't understand Connor, that's fine, but please don't give those that do a hard time. I think you should go a month playing nothing but minecraft, might help ease those uptight bones and broaden your horizons a little.

Wow, yup that would be a shock, I guess there is one good thing about working on a mod that doesn't change Sins roletypes. Most I have to worry about is why don't most of my cruisers have fighters...

If you want to give them better roles, then you have to ask why the 'cruisers' are anything more than specialized destroyers? Where are the real scale cruisers? Why is the strikecraft so limited in number? And why are corvettes only coming out now?

I want my Tulwar!

Lol, you're more of a pro, not a tester.  Come back online under JJ and not always undercover we need some competition for JJ.  Also, feel free to throw me in under the pro side if the pros need another player

I can play again this week also; however I'm willing to sit this one out to give other players a chance to play.
