Square map vs Hex map

Was there ever any consideration to have the tactical maps be hex based instead of square? Square tactical maps seem so outdated to me, and it makes me sad that games like this and HoMM are still using Squares.

Battle for Wesnoth is a great example of a game that uses hex instead of square

I prefer tetrahedons myself. Why limit ourselves?

Ah, that's because the matter square or hex had been settled some time ago by a decree from the highest authority (ie. Frogboy). :D

Brad doesn't like hexes.

From here.

Even with the innovations, Elemental is stubbornly traditional in places. "I hate hexes," says Wardell when asked what he thinks of Civ 5's big new feature. "One, I like being able to move in eight directions. I don't like only being able to move in six. Two, it makes the game feel like playing on a hardcore board tile game. I just don't like that look."
End of quote

From here.

I personally agree with you about hexes and of course about Battle for Wesnoth, beautiful and fun game. But there is no chance for Elemental getting hexes, so not much point in discussing it (it got discussed to death over a year ago), and one can still have a good game with squares.

And also because at this stage of development there is no realistic way to change it.

I mean I agree with you that hexes > squares, but it's not changing at this point.

I really don't feel like hexes / squares is that big of a deal. And I kind of agree that hexes always give a more hardcore vibe to any game. Whenever I see a board game with hexes I immediately get the feeling that this is ultra strategic with the expense of approachability. I don't mind that, but I don't mind squares either.

And I used to like being able to move with a numpad. Nowdays I only have laptops so I don't have a numpad to use, but back in the days it was better than hexes for that reason.

Everything he said, down to the hex vibe (hex games always feel more mechanical to me also, not sure why) - with the exception that I *do* have a numpad which I can use:-)

Hexes would be awesome. WoM suffers because of lack of zones of control for movement and it would be much easier to use with hexes than tiles. (With hexes each other hex has a definite border where tiles have borders and corners to consider).

I have a compromise.

If you turn the monitor 45 degrees you get diamonds!!!!!!!!!!  Thank you Shreddies.

Cackfiend is Jon Shafer's pseudonym... he's still trying to get Brad to consider hexes.

I agree I perfer the Hex and AOW:SM had som fantastic maps. Hex just has a more natural feel to it when moving and attacking.
