Evoking Emotion

If you've been in the normal forums, you've likely seen me, but I decided to come here for once...  As some of you will know, I am a technically oriented person who is fascinated by psychology.

As such, for my science fair project, I am testing the effect of emotion on subjects while performing tasks critical to life.  However, I have been having difficulty figuring out what exactly to use to evoke the desired emotion.  Thus far, the best thing I can come up with is using movies.  If someone has a better idea, please tell me.  If not, give examples of movies that display the following emotions (I have a few movies written down already)...

Sadness: A walk to remember, the Notebook

Anger: I got nothing...

Hyper/Adrenaline: Braveheart/spy movie/other similar "man-flick"

Happiness: Pursuit of Happiness/need a good comedy...  And I'm vetoing Napoleon Dynamite before anyone says it...

Love: Fireproof/need something that makes the subjects feel warm and fuzzy...

Fear/Anxiety: no idea...  No scream/gore fests please, as some of the subjects may be hemophobic...

Frustration: some movie with an incredibly annoying character...

Disappointment/Depression: some something that won't evoke tears, but is still incredibly depressing

General rules for movie suggestions:

1. Nothing R rated.  I have a friend who has the equipment to censor them for the sake of the subjects, but I don't feel like having him do that.  It wastes time and rules out many potential subjects.

2. Nothing incredibly gorey.  Someone can get shot, but I don't want a movie where someone gets cut in half by a chainsaw...

3. Nothing that curses every other word.

So, yep...  Ideas are welcome.  I may not end up using all these emotions in the final project, but I want to see what people can come up with...

I'm still thinking of some but as of the moment, the first thing that came to my mind...

Happiness: The Pursuit of Happyness. -- the movie is not at all comedy and the likes. I prefer the overall feeling after having seen the entire movie. I remember feeling happy/inspired after watching it.

Frustration: just some movie which falls short of my expectations... like Watchmen.

Love: Fireproof! very wonderful story that gave me a deeper understanding of love.

Whether or not fictions elicit genuine emotional responses is controversial philosophically (ie. the seemingly emotional responses that we have may not count as 'actual emotions'). I don't know if that matters for your science fair or not.

Well, like I said, this is the best I've got as of now...  And I'll add fireproof and PoH to the OP...

Hyper/Adrenaline: Braveheart/spy movie/other similar "man-flick"

Another name for this mood is bellicose. From Latin, bellum, meaning "war".

If you want a movie that does fairly well for evoking emotions of sympathy, Signs.

What about Silence of the Lambs for Fear/Anxiety?

Im pretty sure Silence of the Lambs breaks rules 1, 2, AND 3.  Congrats to you for scoring the hat trick.  I think the integral part of the movie that breaks the rules is where he removes the guard's face and wears it himself to escape from the authorities....I could be wrong.

Suggestions:

Love: Love, Actually (PM's Love Theme.  That is all.)

Hyper/Adrenaline: Tomorrow Never Dies (Best of the Brosnan Bonds, if you ask me)

Frustration: The Great Escape, if you think about it.

Other than that, I got nothing.

Fear:i suggest Intensity (based on a book by Dean Koontz) (not to gory if i remember right but an exteamly good suspense movie)

you said ideas(though it may not be better) what about having them read short stories or even small books, there aregood short stories by edgar allen poe and ambroise beirce that could induce fear( tell tale heart, pit and the pendulam, The premature burial, etc and even some that could be used to stimulate the other emotions.

http://poestories.com/index.php- you can get stories here if you wish.

psychology, it fascinates me also.....

You should try classical music.

For example Mozart's Requim would serve perfectly for sadness.

Disappointment/Depression: The Sixth Sense; In Love and War

Happiness: The Princess Bride; George of the Jungle; Nacho Libre

Hyper/Adrenaline: Clear and Present Danger; The Bourne Supremacy

I am testing the effect of emotion on subjects while performing tasks critical to life.

You can not watch a movie and perform critical tasks at the same time. So, you should get away from the movie idea altogether. Once the subject has watched the movie, they will reset when they begin the task.

You need to introduce the emotion while they are performing the task, as your quoted statement says.

So, you need to use real people in a blind situation. Which means not telling the subject anything except that they are being tested in a specific task. Then you bring in an outside force (a person or thing) to elicit a response from the subject while they are performing their task, and measure their response and performance before, during and after the distracting event.

Here is a simple one.

While the subject is performing the task, set off a firecracker.

What emotions and responses would you expect?

While the subject is performing the task, have two people walk through the room arguing about something. The subject of the argument will evoke different emotional responses from anyone hearing it.

No...  The emotion would remain for a while after the movie is complete..  I'm not going to be doing random things to the subjects.  The testing will begin upon the immediate completion of the movie.

So no, the point is not to affect the emotion while doing it as you have misinterpreted it as being.  But rather I am testing already set emotions on the effects.  In other words, I am testing the subjects while emotion rather than evoking emotion during a test.

Anger? Discuss politics. And be sure to say you believe the counter to everything the other person does. With politics, its easy to make someone PO'ed.

Oh, I know that.  One of my best friends is a staunch Republican.  While I don't disagree with him politically often, it is funny to play the devil's advocate and argue against him since I know both sides a lot better than he does and thus, whichever side I pick, I win.

However, most of the subjects would not care for a political or religious debate.  Most would just walk away or be annoyed by it.  That and most know how I stand with the subjects anyways, so it would do no good...

But any rate, I want to use the same system to evoke each emotion, not movies on some and political talks on others..  I want consistency...
