The Wood Spider
Drugs for all!
Wood spider? Is that what they're called...! My garden is full of the little buggers! They all seem quite normal though.
btw, what's a crack bitch? Do I need one?
I saw a doco once where a funnelweb punctured an aluminium can... not once but three times. They're pretty aggressive and will attack just about anything... particularly at mating/nesting time. Was staying in a place at Greenacre... back in the days when I did removals... saw a funnelweb go for a truck tyre that got too close to the nest... put the wind up me, put it that way.
Yeah, we get a lot of huntsmen spiders here... many a time we'll have four or five come inside and set up (spider) house. They're pretty wimpy, tho... more scared of us than we are of them... and they keep down the numbers of insect pests... so they're the only spider I can tolerate/don't kill.
A few years back I was bitten by a whitetail and suffered some pretty horrific after effects... necrotising/rotting flesh on my left leg. It'll still flare up even 16 - 18 years later, so no, I don't take any chances with spiders... squish first (unless it's a harmless huntsman) and ask questions later.
What is it with them beasts and beaties in Oz?
Seems like they're real monsters. Thank G-d they can't fly!
they can do a pretty decent jump/lunge..
its wonderful when they come into your bathroom at night....and head for the vanity basin....it's too slippery for them to climb out....so you walk into the bathroom all blurry eyed first thing in the morning..and go to splash some water on your face...and come face to face with that in your sink....
they're very hard to kill too....they can live a coupla days or so under water....so when you net them out of the pool...and put them on the side of the concrete...after a while in the sun....they just come back to life...... Spray has no affect on them with their thick shell...i've drowned them in insecticde...till they're white foam mass....and no affect... back of a spade does the trick though.... but you wanna be accurate first time...and not piss 'em off...![]()
Damn.....dontcha just hate spiders?!!!!!!!
I have a story for yall.
I used to live in a wooded area and we had a few spiders around. One day, I was getting out of the shower and I felt my hair drop down over my forehead. As I reached up with my right hand to push my hair back up on my head, I felt something crawl onto my hand!
I brought my hand down and there was a spider on my hand and, legs and all, I'd say it was about six inches across.....bigger than my hand!!!
Needless to say, I slung it across the room, saw it crash into the mirror and fall amongst my girlfriend's makeup on the countertop. I then ran through the house, naked as a jay bird, screaming like a schoolgirl!
Only to see my girlfriend's son coming in the back door, seeing me standing there, pale white, naked, and dripping what appeared to be water? all over the carpet!!
I got a robe on, went into the bathroom with a can of Zippo lighter fluid and the spider was still there, appearently stunned from the argument with the mirror, and I doused him real good with the fluid, which contains a burn agent called naptha. He just curled up and died!!
Just wanted to share that, my most scary spider story (most funny now) with you awesome guys and gals for in these here times of trouble, we can all use a good laugh.
BTW, the above is 100% true and accurate.
Its a Mouse spider, just as bad as a Funnel Web and guess what, they live in Sydney ....
A quick story about a spider.
When I was young my mum install in us not to go outside with bare feet, not to jump around under trees, don't roll around at night time on the grass and most of all don't go near large black spiders!!
One morning I went out to get the paper for my dad, I notice a large black spider cawing slowly my way on the front lawn. Like all five year old boys, I got a stick and started to poke it. It got very angry showed it fangs and wave its front legs at me. So thinking this was interesting I gave it a few more pokes to see if it would bite the stick. Nope, the Funnel Web decided it had enough and started to chase me. These things lunge at you while showing their fangs, not a pretty sight.
My mum came out to see what all the screaming and crying was about, scream herself and started to bash the spider with a rake. Took a few good gos to kill the thing.
I learnt two things that day, don't go poking things with sticks they just might not like it and even though your mum can smack you bum red your dad also can have a go.
We moved away that year.
Good story, taz!!
In some cases the mouse spider is worse... being bigger, faster, harder to kill.... and, in some instances, more venomous, with recurring effects that can last for years. Very nasty indeed... and like the funnelweb, impervious to insect household sprays.
