Sins Modding Forum. You want it, We got it!

Alright, maybe not everything, but enough

Alright, so, Im going to tell you a story about a guy who plays Sins.

He tried the game, was a bit apprehensive at first, but then fell in love with it, especially its potential.

So, after about a year of playing Sins, he started to get bored. He saw all these requests for features to be added to Sins, but realised how many of them would/were getting ignored.

Then, he made a recommendation for certain Cap ships to require research before they are built, so as to be able to increase their effectiveness in such a way that wouldnt break the (especially early) game.

That idea was seen by other Sins Forum members, and eventually turned into a mod idea. (For anyone who doesnt know, Mod stands for Modification, where you change or add game files to make the game do something different)

Then, that guy discovered the Modding Forum on https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/forum/443

There he found mods that totally change Sins so you can play with Star Wars ships, Star Trek ships, Warhammer 40k ships, Halo ships, Stargate ships (note, not all of the aforementioned mods are playable as yet, but they are definitly in the works)

Mods that add entirely new races, that make the ships in the game fly around like a real space battle, not like Civil War soldiers lining up and shooting. Mods that change the visuals of the game so missiles are more visible, explosions are more attractive and general weapons fire just looks mouthwatering. Mods that change game music and expand on the Sins game in general by adding new planet types with planetary bonuses, buffs and nerfs. Existing ships get (BALANCED) upgrades and new abilities, fleet supply is increased by 80%, planetary scale is made more realistic, and AI that are smarter and actually use their superweapons/high powered weapons (i.e. Missile Barrage and Cleansing Brilliance).

Point of the story is: If you are getting bored with Standard Sins, but cant be bothered with Online Play (I know CenturionJixra is going to pop his head in here sooner or later). If you have ideas for things that would make Sins even more awesome or even add a whole new dimension, or move Sins in a whole new direction (Total Conversion Mods), then the Sins Modding Forum is for you!

Seriously, i could not bring myself to play another game of Sins because the rinse and repeat i had gotten used to was simply too much to justify playing again. Then i downloaded a few mods, and the simple curiosity of playing with Star Trek ships, or to see what new kinds of planets/abilities had been added, was enough to bring me rushing back to Sins.

Now, i really dont mean/want to bash the Devs, they had/have and Idea of what they want Sins to be, and i understand and respect that.
But, if you want to play a game where you can have multiple Superweapon Cannons on a single planet, or Colonisable, Armed Orbiting moons, or Moving Starbases, then there is more than likely a mod for you, and if there isnt, write out your ideas and see if anyone else is interested in developing your mod with you. Modifications are the Dev sanctioned way of playing Sins the way you want to.

So come over, see what there is, and remind yourself how much potential Sins of a Solar Empire has, and how awesome it can be.

Good Modding, and Happy Sinning

(Note: To the best of my knowledge, if you are reading this Thread through Impulse, you cannot access the Modding Forum. Your best bet is to open an Internet Browser and copy and paste the above link there)

Poor fellow.  If only he had discovered the "Ironclad Online" button which would have allowed him to play with and against real human allies and opponents in online multiplayer (aka "The Real Sins Game").  Then he could experience a greater challenge than playing against the silly AI and enjoy more competitive, more challenging, more intense, more suspenseful, and more fulfilling games along with the camraderie that comes from having human allies and from becoming friends with other people online.  (The game's AI isn't bad as far as AI goes, but it will just never come close to comparing to the strategic considerations that human opponents present.)  He might have even enjoyed the 5v5 pickup games (pug) matches where captains draft-pick the other eight players for their teams.

The poor guy probably doesn't know what he's missing.  But there is good news!  He could still discover the online multiplayer community and at the very least play comp stomps, humans v. AI games, which would at least allow him to enjoy the company and camraderie of other people while taking down hordes of AI opponents.  That might also be a good way to become accustomed to the online game before playing against other people.

Im pretty sure i mentioned the fact that the guy wasnt interested in ICO... and honestly, as it stands, Mods and ICO dont work that well together because everyone needs to download the same mods...

Ive no problem with you promoting ICO, but this is about the modding forum, and i really dont want it turning into another Online vs. Single Player thread, so, with all due respect, try to stay on topic =)

Well, there are some people who would rather mod because they just would. That being said, I have the impression that getting there was all the fun for the modder, mostly.

How many of the mods have been maintained? How many have been kept up to date with the latest game version? How many will work with patch version 1.05? All of this is very mysterious to the average player like me.

Every sins player should be able to read this.

Indeed, good modding and happy sinning! :)

The Modding Forum works much like the standard Sins Forum, so everytime a Mod is updated, someone will post about it and the updated mod thread will be shown at the top of the forum page.

However, Modders often do what they do out of love and, sometimes, boredom. They do not get paid, and often have real life issues that will always come before modding. For this reason, Mod updates may be few and far between, and sometimes mods will be abandoned completely due to unforseeable circumstances (for instance, on one mod i was monitoring, one of the developers' computer crashed, and all his data and models for the mod was lost. He then left the development team, and as far as i know that mod is on hold).

Some of the old school mods are only compatible with Vanilla Sins v1.05, but most mods nowadays work with Entrenchment v1.03, and in fact, the current standard is to have your mod compatible with Entrenchment v1.03.

However, everything has a flip side. Yes, support for your mod(s) of choice may not be as reliable as support from IC itself, BUT, the possible level of involvement is much greater. Community communication is much greater, or larger quantity and much more frequent (usually), and you can post balance changes and even requests, and you may even be listened to, and have your idea incorporated into a mod. Best thing is that certain mods are stackable (total conversion mods [mods that change the game so you play as The Federation from Star Trek or the Galactic Empire from Star Wars etc] often wont stack due to conflicts). Certain mods that change the music, make the ships fly around like fighters, change the planet size/shape/style/type/bonuses etc. all can be stacked to enable you to play the game you want.

And, once you get confident enough, you may even start to mod yourself. Get a team together or go it solo, build your own ship models, skin them, import them into the game via a mod, and shazam, you get to send your Imperial Deathstar against a Vasari Fleet =)

How come people are playing with 1.05? Is it because this is only the last version that cna be downloaded online cause their game isn't legal? or do people just don't want to download impulse and update? or do you people just don't want to update?
