Newbies welcome in games

A lot (most?) of games that I see dont' like newbies and newbies often get flamed.  Now nothing wrong with wanting to have mostly pro's for a more competative match.

I'm not a newbie anymore myself but I wouldn't consider myself a pro either.  I still learn in every game (run!) and I hope I don't get flamed myself if I do a "noob" thing.

BUT, we all have to learn somewhere.  So I typically try to host custom games from time to time where newbies are welcome.  Last night I had a game where we had a couple people that it was their first or second game online.  It was a fun match overall and hopefully they learned something.  But there also wasn't any flaming (unless there was on the other team and I couldn't see it) so I hope the newbies felt comfortable. It's also fun to see someone type "what the heck is a finger of god?"  Good times.  B)

I feel that to grow the community of players we need to have some games where new players can feel comfortable in trying out their skills and to get better.  I have found with online games in the past that it's very hard for newbies to actually get into the game a couple months after release because nobody wants to play with a noob.  I hope that isn't the case with Demigod.

Anyway, hope some others will also decide to host games that are friendly to newbies and help them along in their education.

Have a fun weekend of gaming!

Community definitely has to be more receptive to new players... we don't want this to become a new DotA-styled elitist community.  :-"

Let me explain to you from the other perspective why noobs are frequently not welcome. Now let me start by I don't yell at noobs, I do my best to help them once they are in a game, no point in harassing them once the game has started.

Just put yourself in my shoes for a sec. I play the pantheon tourney mainly, and after waiting around 30min-45min for a game to actually connect, about half the time I am either 2v1 or with a computer. Now imaging my frustration that the one time I am actually with a person that it is a noob, his first day with the game, and I lose.

I am fine with noobs, but I think they should stick to custom or skirmish untill they have atleast played a few games and not ask questions like "Where do I buy equiptment? At the citadel?"

As much as I agree elitest players are annoying and the moment you make a mistake or make a build that they don't "approve" they cuss you out, but on the other hand, they are dedicated players. As a new game, demigod needs that group of dedicated players to keep the multiplayer alive and well.

Once I got comfortable in Supreme Commander I'd do this exact thing to help others out. I'll probably do this some time soon too and just try crazy off the wall builds so things don't become too one sided.

I've played in of your games and I am truely appreciative of that. I am not a noob but I just don't pick up on strategies probably like the hard-core player does. I am trying to learn and be good but, I will never discourage a new player from playing because they aren't padding my stats. Thanks for your consideration of all players.

What are you talking about? I see all the time "noobs only" games being hosted on the custom games list. If you are a noob, join those games. If you join games where it reads "no noobs", "pro only" etc. then you are the douchebag.

Newbs are fine, until your team has one and their team does not.

Then they become a weight that drags you down.  You know you might have been able to win if it just weren't for that newb!

A matchmaking system is supposed to fix this by matching newbs or noobs with other newbs and noobs.  The Demigod matchmaking system is currently in shambles.  That's why I don't trust it and only play custom games.

Oh I agree, there is *nothing* wrong with wanting games without noobs.  I do as well.  But I have seen first hand noobs getting reamed in games.  So my point is to try to grow more games that are friendly to noobs to help them out.

And yes, I have been stuck on a losing side that obviously will lose but it goes on for 30 minutes.  Frustrating but it will happen.  As for Pantheon, I want to do those as well too but it's unacceptable to me to have that 30-45 minute wait so I do only custom games right now until they fix it.

People should never flame noobs if they join up a random game. The only time I glady flame them without any guilt is when they join a Custom Game labelled, "Good Players Only etc." or something along those lines.

If your playing Pantheon and joining random Custom Games that dont include anything about no noobs being allowed in their title then you simply have to expect them to be on your team, and you have no right to flame them.

I know im still guilty of a bit of flaming but I will try and be more friendly to them. (I remember my games in DotA....ugh the flaming was terrible) and I dont want Demigod to turn out like that. So far its been much better though.

I'm talking about not flaming your teammate when you find it he's new, which I see happening too often.  The OP seems to say he hosts newbie servers where he teaches new players how to play the game in such a way that they have fun while still learning to prepare them for less sheltered matches.  I like to see this kind of thing... communities reaching out and embracing new players instead of shunning them.

Maybe if you weren't so fixated on winning nomatter the cost you'd take a kinder approach to people who've played less than you have. I've won a pantheon game by taking advantage of my "newb" teammate by asking him to bait the enemy demigods into chasing him, while I ran to their portals and capture locked them with catapults.

Well if any of you "n00bs" want to play, I host a 2v2 sometimes. 2v2 Chicago Host!! Know that you are welcomed.

Yeah. I have not met many people who have screamed at n00bs and have found the multiplayer community pretty open. There are plenty of "pro" only games where the people who like to scream a n00bs can go.
