Where are the heroes?

Heroes

I was just thinking about what SINS is missing, then I realized it. Heroes. Many games have them, and they are always  fun to have and may be your pride and glory. I think they should be in the next expansion, which is centered around diplomacy, if I am correct. They would be an excellent addition to it, as they would not be completely centered around combat. I would guess they would renew moral if they were in a fleet, and make them fight harder because they have inspiration on the battlefield. If the hero should be killed, it would need to affect your fleet and economy in some way. Almost forgot to say this even though it should be obvious to everyone. They should be capital ships

Now how to add them to the game, and I think I ahve an answer for that.

1. You could add them to the game by giving heroes at the begining of the game

2. You could make it to where you get a chance to build a hero unit if meet certain requirements, such as defeating an enemey or wiping out the pirates or something along those lines

3. I think this would be the best way, but I had to give multiple choices. Heroes created in combat. Such as, for example, A Kol battle ship defeating multiple other ships, such as other capitals. I personaly think it would have to be after killing at least five other capitals itself.

The effectes of having hero units. As I said above, should make nearby nearby other units in your fleet fight better, or worse if the Hero unit is destroyed, but the fleet would adventualy recover from the loss and would start fighting nowmaly after a time. The hero unit should have some unique ability only available to it and, no two heroes should be alike, so you would need to make sure that there is a certain variet to them. I know I'm being a little picky here, but bear with me. There should  be strict limit of two having two heroes in the game, and after they die no more heroes for you

And now I am done. Please comment, no wait, let me rephrase that. For the love of god, please comment, I want there to be more than jsut three comments like my other post. So please comment

Unique units would have been a nice design feature of the game, but not something good to be tacking onto the start.  You already have massive power relative to the strength of early units in your free flagship that walks all over the neutral defenders without even trying.

I think hero units of a sort would be a cool feature.

How to implement them would be an interesting case study. For example, what would they effect. Your case for morale would not work because there is no morale concept in Soase. Possible they could affect dps, regeneration, or anti-matter use except these are also affected by abilities. Making them stronger in hitpoints and/or dps would just make them bigger focus fire targets.

Okay, when I said morale, I meant that the hero would jsut affect the fleet that is near it. It would be simple. It just makes them fight better when it is there, worse if it is destroyed, and the fleet would recove some time afterward. Morale isn't what I meant, just the fighting effectiveness of ships

There are heroes.  They're called Kol Battleships. ;)

I don't think heroes really make sense for this kind of game. After all, (and correct me if I'm wrong) heroes are essentially very powerful units that can use special abilities and level up and the like. That already exists in the form of capital ships, so I'm not sure hero units would add much to SoaSE.

Capital ships already fill the role of "hero" units in Sins.  In fact, gameplay-wise, they're almost identicle to the heroes of Warcraft III.

Good point danw13335. I see what you mean. What I want though, is a unit that has some meaning to it. Not one that you can really create or could be like the others, but one that is truly unique and you could say you were proud to have it. My point is, I want something that has a little history behind it.

The idea is that you create the history for your hero units during gameplay.

I'm sure that if SINS ever gets singleplayer we'll have hero admirals and such (like the guy in the intro). They'll be necessary for telling the game story.

I'll just add to the comment of capital ships being equivalent to heroes. Your 'hero' is any capital ship that has survived the rigors of war long enough to achieve level 6+. Have a couple of close calls nearly losing a high level ship and I think you'll agree on how unique they are.

I see. So they're more for general awesomeness than gameplay? Presumably they would also be pretty powerful, even compared to regular capships. Perhaps a ship that contained the main government of the Vasari, or the flagship of the entire TEC fleet, for example. I'd be in support of that.

What about having something like Star Wars: Empire At War, where you can build fleet admirals and put them in Capital Ships for bonuses of some sort?

Yeah, I must say that until Ironclad develops single player story campaigns, there isn't much reason for heroes right now because there would be no context for their existence.  Capital ships already have plenty of abilities, and adding heroes would create extra problems for balance issues.

That being said, if the game ever has story campaigns, I would love to see heroes, and their implentation into normal games would be interesting.
