German Translation

Hi there.

I just read over the mainpage again.

Here are a few thoughts:

First of all, don´t "translate" the names of the demigods! Really, just write the original names like "Oak" and "Unclean Beast". Not "Eichbaum" or "Unsauberes Biest". It really sounds like an epic fail, trust me:)

Call Rook not "Turm" (which means "tower"), call him Rook!

1:1 translations aren´t great, they are just ...  :waaaa:

Another point on the mainpage:

It´s called "Das Spiel" not "Der Spiel" :)

And don´t rename the pantheon into "Ruhmeshalle". Yeah, it´s maybe the correct translation, but pantheon is also in german well known :)

Update 18th september:

Lua file has been updated, feel free to comment :)

You can find the latest version here.

If anyone wants to provide a better translation than what Atari gave us, please feel free. We'll use it. :)

We talked about this early last year as well, and I totally agree that when it comes to names; they should be left unchanged. They lose quite a bit when they get translated.

as a german myself i must say that the german names sound riddiculous. if you leave them as they are now they will be much better. seriously.

Tell you what, I'll be sure to give some free copies of Elemental (our next game) to people who help us and the community on this kind of thing.

Thats actually a great idea Frogboy. The translations for most games are so bad that I always install the English version. In some games (Oblivion) the translation provided by the publisher was not only incredibly bad, some stuff was just plain wrong. They also used abbrevations to an extend that made finding the right potion in the inventory a guessing game.

Another example was SupCom. On the German forum are small tuts dedicated to changing the localisation of SupCom, FA and GPGnet to English. I think the translation was improved in a patch but its always better to have a good translation on release.

Im glad to see that you take the localisation seriously unlike many other publishers!

PS: Let me spread the news on the German SupCom forum, maybe somebody wants to help. BTW, they would need to be in the beta to participate, right?

Actual they only need one little file. But I recommend to be in Beta for the Demigod flair *_*

Do this also apply to new translations? In that case I want to do a Dutch translation :-)

the same applies to the french translation: taille-tour doesn't sound right at all, it sounds ridiculous. Chêne is even worse, just stick with oak and the rook if you can't find a good translation (and i have to admit it is pretty hard...)

Rook has the problem that most other languages just use the same word for the chess piece as for the tower of a castle which takes away all the fun from the name and just sounds odd.

for Rook you could use "Die verzauberte Burg" (the Enchanted Castle) or just Die Burg (The Castle) it sounds better than Turm (Tower)

I would vote for "Festung". But I'd prefer it even more if the original names were used. This will avoid confusion in chat and forum postings and most of the german gamers I know prefer to use the english names as well.

Frogboy would it be possible to get the dg_loc_v0.1.xls file which is mentioned at the beginning of the strings_db.lua file:

# autogenerated file - DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
# USE dg_loc_v0.1.xls INSTEAD TO EDIT STRINGS

for now we copy the stuff out of the strings_db.lua file and translate it but I guess it would be a lot easier to translate and to later implement if we could do it in the excel file.

Hi,

please dont translate the name of the demigods and the name of the items.

if u do that, it will be impossible to talk about items with people from other countries (France, Italy, ....)

when I ask for "Wütende Klinge" nobody will know that i mean "furious blade"

the translation of such basic elements focres me always to play games in english, to understand what other people talking about

Please give us "Pantheon" not "Ruhmeshalle" (klingt ja nach Nazi-Deutschland)

I wonder do you translate names like Soul of Ice, Frozen Heart etc?

As Bier above said. It makes talking about the game difficult...

The list of translations i have used now:

Health Per Second Gezondheid Per Seconde
health per second Gezondheid per seconde
Health Gezondheid
health gezondheid
Attack Speed Aanvalssnelheid
Mana Per Second Mana Per Seconde
Mana per second Mana per seconde
Weapon Damage Wapen Schade
set of armor pantserset
Armor Pantser
armor pantser
Enhanced Attributes Verbeterde Eigenschappen
increased by vergroot met
increased vergroot
Range Increased by Bereik Vergroot met
Increased Vergroot
Attack and Movement Speed Aanvals- en Bewegingssnelheid
Movement Speed Bewegingssnelheid
briefly kort
dealing [GetDamageAmt] damage veroorzaakt [GetDamageAmt] schade
and throwing smaller units into the air en gooit kleinere eenheden in de lucht

So things like Armor, Health are translated, but not names of spells, items etc.

And this is a strange one:

ABILITY_HEPA01_0040="When Unclean Beast attacks, enemies are afflicted with a disease. When they die, they will explode, dealing 150 damage and sending smaller units into the air."

i would expect:

ABILITY_HEPA01_0040="When Unclean Beast attacks, enemies are afflicted with a disease. When they die, they will explode, dealing [GetAmount] damage and sending smaller units into the air."

The amount of damage is hard coded into the string?

I actually like the guildwars approach where you see the english name of skills and items when you press the right ctrl button.

If we finfished the translation, do you want us to upload it anywhere?

Ok, translation is finished. \o/

We´re now looking for visual glitches and control that every word fits in its space.
