out of memory error

After playing GC2 ultimate edition for a few hours the progrm CTDT with message out of memory error. I've got 2 gig of RAM and a 500 gb hard drive.

also runs on a 8500gt 500 mb video card.  Symptoms leading up to this were system slowing and sluggish response and stuttering sound. I'm running XP with all updates and the latest drivers for all devices.

Thanks in advance - Is there a way to fix this without registry mess or buying more hardware?

For me, turning off planetary lights pretty much stopped OOM errors.

The other standard advice is to turn down planetary textures, and to turn off enhanced rendering for ships. (or something like that, look in the forums)

Other than that try playing smaller maps.

you can also try to increase the size of the Windows paging file if those 2GB of RAM seem to not be enough. Are you using XP, Vista or Seven?

2GB is all GC2 will use as a 32bit app without using LargAddressAware(and that can make the game crash happy). In addition to the things mentioned, limiting how many invasions you run per gaming session can help immensely if you OOM is after a lot of invading. Seems every invasion adds between 6-30MB of additional RAM usage and doesn't get released for some reason at the conclusion of the invasion. Only OOM I ever had was due to running a pile of invasions in one session shooting my RAM usage from just under 1GB up to 1.7GB and an OOM crash.

I am running XP as stated. I have increased my page file to 8 gigs.

I do find that if I turn the computer off for a while and take a break. The memory empties. My OOM came WITHOUT me doing 1 invasion. However I had played for many hours on a HUGE map with all opponents and all minor races on.  I had a similar problem with GC1 . But I could not resolve it so I shelved the game.  The music still stutters until it steadies itself. I'm not running any other programs while playing. The biggest factor for me seems to be number of turns taken.

Can you guys come up with a patch that will keep the memory freed up ??  (to stardock)

Thanks to all and if you have any further suggestions please feel free......
