Where are the Pirates going?

When the Pirates depart their planet, they already have a destination, how do I find out where it is...(if it is even my system). Also, will the Pirates deviate from that destination under X circumstances?

With out some look outs you won't know where they are going. In my games even when I push the bounty up higher on the other players they don't seem to deviate from there. Once they are out they are out, and on their way.... *spooky sounds*.

That is correct to my best understanding.

Yes that is true, it also seems that they will attack the closest planet of the player who the attack it directed toward. So if you are the one the pirates are after and you have one planet that is 2 jumps away from the pirate world and one that is 3 jumps, they will most likely go after the 2 jump planet.

Now if you have multiple planets that are the same amount of jumps away then you don't really know which one they will attack. I'm not sure if this is actually how pirates work when choosing which planet to attack but that seems to be the case when it comes to my games.

Actually, I've had a situation where I had a planet with a direct connection with a pirate base and three others that were 2 jumps away. All of them suffered attacks.

They like trade ships.

and mining ships and colonizers, maybe that has something to do with it. Man this is like a good card trick, I want to know how it works! \o/

I'm a major fan of the quanity over quality method. You are likely not to find true math to the pirate equasion. I suggest planting scouts like flies all over the joint. It has saved me in a few cases.

They will head for planets with lots of trade ports.  If your primary target is a tradeless planet, they waltz right through it to tag one that has them.

As a rule, if they are attacking you, they will go through as few OWNED systems as possible.  If you have one system right next to them and one that is three jumps away, but the systems between are not colonized by anyone, they will attack the closer one FIRST, and at some point will check out the other system to see if it's easier pickings, but I have never seen them go through more actualy colonized and owned systems than they have to in order to get there.
