Is this a good idea ? Should I be worried ?

I have 2 allies. One on each side of me. (130 odd planets in 1 system, with 10 players, all hostile at first).

They hate each other !

So one of them has parked a fairly sizable fleet on my front lawn, and I've had to send my home defense fleet off to do a task set by the other ally.

Now to make matters worse, the ally on my lawn has twice sent me "Your days are numbered" messages (that I've noticed), for the planet they are parked at, which is also my Home Planet !

Is leaving them on my lawn unguarded a good idea ?

They are at 84% at the moment, but since they keep asking me to attack my other ally, I expect this to drop progressively to the point where eventually all the alliances will fall apart. At that point, I have my backup fleet parked on their back lawn from which to spearhead into their space, but until my Strike fleet actually runs the distance to get home from taking out the last enemy, my front lawn remains unguarded and my home planet vulnerable.

Now the interesting thing is that this same ally has passed through my lines to attack my other ally and is currently sacking one of his planets. He keeps asking me for help, which I cant give because I'm allied to both of them, so I stationed a colony frigate appropriately just in case the planet falls :)

So I have a very big sacking fleet with my home planet between it and its own space should my backup fleet start attacking its planets after the falling out, but they have my front lawn staked out just in case.

Now, if they break the alliance and declare war suddenly, I'm caught short at home, as my Strike fleet is still some distance away and running as fast as it can. But it wont save my home planet if the worst happens and probably wont save the ones around it either.

Should I be worried, or is 84% still well within safe margins for diplomacy to prevail ?

I don't believe the AI will break a cease fire until you dip below 35%. It definitely shouldn't go straight to war from 84%.

But, eventually you will have to pick one or the other to side with, unless you want to lose both alliances :)

Well......that was interesting.

Suspect ally pulled the plug on everything at 72% !!! Was after I yet again failed a mission to hit my other ally, which makes me wonder if there is a counter for mission failures after which the plug is pulled regardless of the love status.

So, being caught well short, I desperately asked for a cease fire and actually got one, about 30 seconds before the shooting began.

That gave me enough time to get the bulk of my fleet back home, and I was in the process of surrounding the (now enemy but doesnt realise it yet) ships camped on my lawn, when my remaining ally turns up with a moderate fleet and starts the shooting anyway. The fleets move position, so I hit the goto war button and then got out of the planet area as over 600 ships hit the fan. That really stretched my lag out. Results, Apricot 1, ex-ally 0. My ally lost some ships, I lost a few, but because I was in my defense area, I only lost a few, when otherwise I'd have lost heaps.

I'm now in the process of removing ex-ally from the game, but thats not making my remaining ally all that happy as I'm not hitting his enemy for him.

Interesting lesson in diplomacy :)

That is interesting, I don't think I've ever had an ally go to war with that much happiness. But I suppose if he had no other targets it's possible :P

Yeah it sucks when that happens. The best thing is to ready cannons and shields around worlds that are most at risk. They can buy you about 5-10 mincute to get a fleet into position.

It was a case where my other ally had beaten them back, and they retreated back to my lines (based on my other side). They nearly made it actually, but a new fleet jumped in and drove them to retreat. Not sure why they didnt try the same enemy but different phase lane tho.

So I guess they had no-one else they could attack, and I had been very unhelpful.

If the AI ever breaks a peace treaty, immediately request a cease fire. They'll always accept unless they're the last enemy. It'll buy you a lot of time and you'll usually get the happiness back up before they break that as well.
