Game freeze every few minutes?

Hi all,
I am 3 hours into a HUGE map SP game.  My TEC control about 15 planets.  The game now freezes for about 10 seconds every 1 or 2 minutes.  Its become unplayable.  Is this a known issue?  Any work around?

I have all my settings on max but the game is playable - never shown any lag in the biggest space battles.  Restart/reboot didn't help.  Is it a map issue?

Really don't want to abandon this game since its the first one I am winning :)

Make sure everything is up to date. (Drivers, game [saves don't work across versions though], etc.)

Also, what are your system specs?

I only bought the game the other day. Drivers are all up to date.

Xeon Dual core 3.0 ghz, 4 gigs of ram, 8800 GTS Nvidia with 512mb. Should be ample. And it was fine up until the 3 hour mark.

Ahh - there is the issue. You need a higher spec mark to play past the 3 hour mark :D

If you're running Vista, check that your video drivers are at least version 175.

The only differences between solomani's setup and mine is that I'm running a Core 2 Duo at that speed and using an 8800GT. I've hit the 20 hour mark on 1.05 without lag half that bad at increased speeds. Is the difference really that much?

XP pro, sp3. Drivers are 175.19 (ie the latest).

Turned out to be something running in my tray. Funny it only affected performance 4 hours in. Won after 11 hours :)

uTorrent. It wasn't downloading or anything just dormant waiting to start (I have my torrent client only download between x and y times).
