Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor v1.95 coming

This week

With the Impulse launch this week along with The Political Machine 2008 release, it's been a busy week. But for our next magical trick, we're also releasing the first significant update to Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor.  You can get a preview of some of the changes here.

You will need to use Impulse to get it. Go here to get Impulse.

same here--I'm thinking it won't be on impulse until the patch goes up.

It is possible you may have to reinstall Twilight. I'll check into that. The expansion pack setup from SDC was a total hack (as in, Stardock Central literally had the two GalCiv expansion packs supported through binary changes in SDC itself).

Thank you for the quick reply . I was hoping I would not have to uninstall then reinstall via impulse . I'll wait and see what you find out thank you for your trouble in advance.!!

I had this issue, I was able to fix by hacking the registry (I have XP, so I dont know how this will work with other OS's). The issue is with SDC and what it writes to the registry, not Impulse actually.

If you are comfortable with regediting then you can do the following:

goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2\Twilight\

add a New String Value called Path (do this by right clicking on Twilight folder in regedit), right click on the Path string you just created, and type in the path to your Twilight installation location (where ever your TALaunch.exe file is located).

edit the Exe string (by double clicking on it) and remove the "Twilight\" part from the "Twilight\TALaunch.exe"

To see how this should look, take a peek at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar

I hope I explained this well enough. If I did a poor job, you may be best to uninstall TA from SDC and reinstall in Impulse.

Cheers,

james

I can not get even impulse installed:

Unfortunately I can not install impulse with the (old) free version of Kerio Firewall.
The installer does drive my Firewall nuts in ways I have never seen before.
I get more Firewall shields in my status bar then can be displayed and only on ending the impulse_setup process I get the question if the start of the installation program should be allowed.

I know Kerio is quite and old Firewall but for me it has worked for years without any special problems...

And if you take a look at the impulse forum you can think this can only be a bad yoke.
Impulse is not looking like a mayor working program. So why not using SDcentral??? That at least works!

Big problem.

So I downloaded Impulse and redownoaded TOA. Upgraded to 1.92a. Uninstalled SDC.

And my machine is not utilizing its second core at all (as was the case from having SDC installed and stuff)
.
Use max cpu is checked as always, (preferences were saved). However now when im playing TOA, only 1 core is being utilized. (Hurray for G15lcdmiscellany!)

Anyways I'm not sure what has caused this at all. Is this some weird side effect from impulse not being multithreaded for dual core machines?

/me is now sad.

Here's a update. Dark Avatar is behaving correctly.
I went through and re registered my old GC2 and GC2DA serials as it prompted me to... (why?) So i used the new impulse serial.

Upon returning to the TOA game now, the 2nd core works.

I have no idea what could have caused this. Something is definitely fishy with TOA. Apparently launching Dark Avatar before TOA did it,
(as I re-registered TOA after it worked...)

So its either...

A) Dark Avatar must be launched once before TOA.
B) Somehow the activation mechanism for TOA checks DA (???)
C) I have no idea.

Something is buggy somewhere. I'll keep you posted.

Oh yes and TOA cannot ALT-TAB without crashing. This is both verisons 1.91 and 1.92a. Please fix this....

So I have gotten it installed and it even recognizes ToA...But still I think sdcentral was much more streamlined to the purpose...

By the way where is the full impulse installer for PCs without Network access...
To my understanding for GalCiv there is "NO" copy protection for using it on more than one PC for one person!!!

Whatever it is, it has nothing to do with Impulse.

I can confirm that adding a Path variable to HKLM... for twilight solves the issue.
Just restarted impulse and it works fine :)

We are looking into the ToTA not showing installed issue.  We will have a fix shortly.  Please do not reinstall/uninstall ToTA.

In 1.95 can you guys fix the auto attack issue for ships?

It is still present in 1.92a.

Oops, too late, already reinstalled. Would this hurt anything? I did not reinstall the 1.92 alpha though, figure I will just wait for 1.95 rather than introduce any further complications.

Too late here too, already reinstalled TotA.

Should be fine either way, it's just we don't want to cause you guys to have to do extra work.

Impulse is not wanting to update for me- again.

I'm really starting to hate Impulse for this reason. It's got problems with the registry I believe.

I see update available for DA (.103) but nothing for TA (1.91.021).

Is the new TA patch released yet?

Just to be perfectly clear on the issue: Will 1.95 *only* be available on Impulse? No SDC? If this is the case, then puh-leez give us a .zip. I had a bad experience with the beta; it never worked as it should, and eventually locked my computer up solid. I removed it, and had to manually repair the registry. I'm NOT going through that again.

Stardock, I am one of your biggest fans, and I have every confidence that Impulse will be all that you say it can be. Unfortunately, I don't believe that at this point (and the previous posts confirm) it's quite ready for prime-time.

I didn't see any words about the ever increasing tech rp costs. Are you going to address that?

So Impulse, from my impression so far from using it, just seems to be a more unstable version of SDC with a nasty background, in an attempt to create a Steam-like service with games twice the price of Steam.

I'm installing TOTA when it said it wasn't. Figure I'll see what happens.

I agree about the zip or something. Impulse is nasty so far. (On my laptop it keeps getting stuck trying to update itself and I can't do anything.)

Personally, I can't get past the login screen with Impulse. It keeps saying it can't connect to server. There's nothing special with proxy settings going on, either. Arg.

One thing I'd like to know is how to remove the toolbar Impulse places at the bottom of my screen (and pops up whenever my cursor wanders down there). The program informed me of this after installation, never offered me the option not to install it, and, at first glance, I see no way to remove it. I don't plan on using Impulse very often (only to update GalCiv and Sins) and the icon on my desktop is more than sufficient. I find this most annoying both on principle (no option or readily apparent means of removal) and substance (PITA to have the tool bar pop up accidently on a semi-regular basis).
