[filled] 3D artist looking for a mod

EDIT: Looks like I've got a couple of good leads. Thanks for all the offers. :)

For a while I was going to work on my own personal mod project. However, I've decided to can the idea and look for a mod project to join as a 3d asset creator. I tend to get involved in a lot of things and have my own personal OpenGL game going on as well as a map for a contest UT3 is holding (forget about that map thing...I just hate that game so much I can't even bring myself to map for it. If I hear "take it!" one more time I'm going to rip my hair out!). On top of that, I'm a programmer for a state university during the work day. So with all that, I decided doing a mod from scratch is not a good idea for right now, but joining a team would be a better pace and more productive project to work on since I wouldn't be going it alone.

Things I will do that are supported in Sins:
- create/design new ships from scratch, concepts, descriptions, similar designs, or specifications
- abide by polygon limits
- uv texture mapping
- texture/material creation
- rigging/points for weapons, abilities, etc.
- conversion into the xsi, obj, x, and Ironclad mesh formats
- manage websites, forums, etc. (I do this at work so some days I may be zonked out from using the web too much)

Things that I will NOT do:
- rip assets from another game (this is illegal--this does not mean I won't make ships for Star Trek, Star Wars, Wing Commander, etc...it does mean that I won't reuse the files already inside of that game)
- edit/convert ships in mods from other games (editor and file format conflicts, plus I like to work on new content instead of playing the same old mod again)

Some examples of my modeling work are below. I never really got around to texturing anything, but most of them did have their UV's laid out and did get temporary horrible-looking textures for a while. I do have Painter IX and an Intuos3 tablet so textures are more than possible since I also do digital 2d art.

You can contact me either through this thread, private message, or AIM zjbdragon. Do NOT send me an email because it will get lost in with my work-related emails.

Hey ZJBDragon -

Dawn of Victory could use someone experienced, your stuff looks excellent and very similar to what we're looking for (good with spaceship-looking stuff, efficient as far as poly usage goes). The universe is all original and everything's modeled and skinned from concepts, so should easily satisfy your novelty criterion as well.

Here's an example of the kind of concept stuff we do (we have a pretty awesome artist), and in that images slideshow there are plenty of examples of our existing work.

If you're interested, e-mail Swiss Knight at theswissknight@gmail.com (I think you can also PM him here).

Carbon016, I took a look over the ModDB page and also at the forums for Dawn of Victory. The concept art for your mod is nice and there's a lot of stuff to work with. It looks like you guys already have half a dozen modelers though. I just don't understand why you'd be looking for another modeler when it looks like a bunch of people already signed up.

I'm looking for someone to do this type of work for a MOD I'm currently working on.

The MOD is starting as a couple of mini-MODs, that will eventually be rolled into one TC MOD.

Mini-MODs in process are:
SoaSE: BORG INVATION (which will include Borg, Starfleet, Klingons, Romulans, etc from Star Trek.)

SoaSE: RISE of the REBELLION (which will include the Empire and Rebel Alliance from Star Wars.)

Shoot back to me if you are interested in doing any modeling/texturing work on this MOD.

The modeler situation is far from perfect at the moment. Quite a few did some stuff for the mod and then we didn't hear from them again. We're more in need of skinning, as that's more of a bottleneck at the moment, but we do need modelers as well.

This is excellent that a moddeler is posting for a "job" in the modding community, and I thank you and praise you for doing so. I would also like to vouch for your service, and to join my team of modders. I have a mod called 7 DEADLY SINS, and it started as a great combo mod, combining some of the best mods in the community into on large mod type expansion, and this will continue to be our goal. But the mod also has new content, especially new races, planets, stars, etc. My goal is to get at least 20 new races out, if not more. Some of them are from space games long since dead, like STAR CONTROL and Master of Orion, both of which had dozens of races. I have created a new race, the Atlantians, sort of an "ancient" wise race with superior technology. I am also considering TV show titles, such as the usual Star Wars and Star Trek, as well as B5 and Battlestar Galactica. There is HUGE flexiblity in the mod, and you can take your creativity as far as you want. We have a very open community, as well as our own forum site, welcome to all who want to participate. We have lots of ideas, a couple of coders, and one modeler, and a couple of texturures, including myself. I have just started with 3DMAX, and it is very difficult to say the least. I am going to need more help in order to make my dreams a reality. So, I invite you to check is out, and let me know what you think. This is an open invintation, in case you want to think about it or change your mind later on.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I'll send Swiss Knight an email Saturday (it's rather late right now). Are you looking to have the larger ships modeled? I see a bunch of fighters and what looks to be smaller ships. Something like that German Heavy Cruiser would be a piece of cake for me to model and would probably take 2 days for the model itself and several days for a texture. As for skinning content, that's really really hard for me to do since I use Maya. About the only thing I can import into Maya is an obj file, which would preserve the texture mapping but not necessarily points. I have zero 3ds support there, although the XSI mod tool can translate 3ds and other formats to obj so I can bring them in in Maya and even re-apply the same point skeletons to a rebuilt object via a simple import. It is possible, but might be messy so new content is preferred.

I have 7 Deadly Sins installed and have been playing with that enabled for several weeks now. :) I have to say that your idea and direction of development sounds the most interesting to me because I love the idea of variety be it in planets, races, ships, and so on. Please let me know where to hang out at in your forums. I'll sign up there on Saturday and see what's going on. I have some ships under construction now that weren't intended for Sins, but could be modified to start fleshing out a new race. Also, I do have those upgraded Star Trek models I had started on and the imperial star destroyer I had previously modeled.

Do you have any progress renders/shots, concept art, planning, test ships, or anything like that? Is there anyone else working on this mod? Your project sounds overly-ambitious. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not exactly fun to join a team that collapses under their own project or has a bunch of internal friction. I'm not trying to be mean or say anything negative about your project, I'm just very skeptical because I've been doing modding for a while now and experienced a lot of things.

I'm guessing that its already too late to ask for your assistance with the BFG mod? we could realy use a skinner/texturer at the moment its the only thing that is setting us back. if you would consider helping us it would be a briliant help as other than the skins and emmiter points we are almost set for ships for our first two races

Unfortunately, that's the hardest thing for me to do right now due to file format conflicts, although it's far from impossible. However, you are right. I've got 3 good leads right now and I know for sure that 1 of them is going somewhere. Sorry, but good luck with your project!

I'll update my first post here in just a moment. For anyone else, please hold off on offers. I think I may have found what I was looking for. Thanks though!

ZJBDragon:
The best place is in the "official" 7 DEADLY SINS forums, the steathblade link I gave you. That is where we are doing the most of our modding. The forum here is really for the masses, but a good place to get ideas and get people hyped up and see their reactions to see if they like what we are doing.
I am glad you are considering my project for your work, and really glad you are enjoying the mod. Those models you have already done will be a most welcome addition to 7 DEADLY SINS, especially since my scope is so braod. Thank you again. Looking forward to working with you.
