What is the'karma' rating next to people's names?

Hello everyone...

I am relatively new to forum life :-) and as such I am unfamiliar with the 'karma' rating next to people's names. I see that most people rank 0, whereas others range up to 9 (I haven't yet seen higher than this).

I would like to the following: what is the point of this rating, how it is assigned and who assigns it? How does it help you in a forum environment? I assume it is subjectively assigned by an individual or individuals?

I know its a random question, but I don't like seeing stuff I don't quite understand ;-)

Well, for sins and demigod, all it really means is that mods can give you 7-8 karma in one shot if they so choose :p

Well, I tried to give Kryo karma (cuz really guys, who else deserves it more?) but it won't let me :-( -which is weird cuz I haven't given anyone karma yet, so i know its not the 10 min thing-

Try hovering your mouse over where it should be. At first it wouldn't show up as a button, but the link would still be there if I hovered the mouse over it.

Clear your cookies, check again. Usually things like that take a cleaning out of the trash before you can see 'em.

I highly dislike karma and other kinds of forum ranks, because they inevitably lead to some people posting for karma. The only karma system that I've seen work is Ebay ratings, but that's because you have to buy or sell stuff before voting.

I hope they're going to put the Meta medals and where you can see members logged on at the bottom of the forums back up. The member number thing also is a little too statisticy and impersonal, liked the user-classes better (Citizen, Veteran, etc.)

That or a karma war will break out!

I think we have a fighting chance of that not happening the behavious in general is at a far more mature level than many online forums, although I hear the thought ..... its happened on most forums with a "Karma" system. This Forum could well break the mould in that regard though ....

Bring back the medals...please!!! I for one could not care about karma if it means my medals are gone. Also the ranks are a far better than member no.

I tried to give Kryo some karma today, too, and had it fail. (his advice on my question about CD versus download has gotten me to actually play Twilight.).

I was able to give Frogboy a point of karma, though, because he deserves it, too.

That positive karma system is somewhat of an arbitrary joke.

If you read the reasons why some people obtain positive karma (by clicking on their golden +X number), it's obvious that there is a little gang of fanboy buddies, on this forum, who inflate each other's karma.
