How do you remove ships/defenses once built?

Recently I wanted to remove some of my defensive plateforms to try a different strategy (to make up for the lack of any real defense in this game).  Is it possible to delete them and get some profit out of it?  Do you just have to attack them with your own ships to destroy them?  This seems like a very crude method.  I hope there is something better that I'm unable to find.

At the bottom/middle of the UI, there's a slim, striped little button that you can click to scuttle whatever you currently have highlighted. You'll get a small portion of your resources back for doing this.

Press Alt-H or click the orange button at the bottom center of the UI to scuttle ships or structures.

Just a suggestion- maybe the scuttling button could have a different graphic or be a bit more obvious about what it does. I only knew about it because I really paid attention during the tutorial, but the button's view doesn't give an impression of what it does inherently.

If the button was any brighter I would be clicking it all the time by accident.

I'm not suggesting it be brighter. Just that it's function be more obvious. A bar with arrows/lines on it doesn't imply to me that it obviously would equate to scuttling.
