How does combat exactly work?

All those wepon types and armor types...

I am trying to find good description of how exactly combat works. I see that different ships have different weapon types, like beam, plasma, etc. Also, there is different armor type like light, medium, heavy. And also, there are shields and numerical value of armor, like 1 or 3, which can be either increased through research or through special abilities of some ships. What do all those things mean? How are the damage calculations exactly performed?

Bump?

Can anyone at least mention the natural "counters" for different type of ships? Like what is the counter for long range missile frigates?

The ship infocards display what armor types that particular ship is effective against (damage bonus based on weapon vs armor type). So that pretty much answers most of your post.

Shield mitigation is pretty much directly how much damage the ship ignores. So if you get shot for 100 damage with 50% mitigation, you take 50 points. Shield mitigation still applies once the shield is down. The Vasari Phase Missiles ignore mitigation when they kick in, as well as all DoTs.

Armor we don't have an official formula for, but it also reduces incoming damage on a different scale with diminishing returns. Someone who did the math would be better suited to reply to this one, but basically the higher your armor, the less benefit you get from additional armor points.

Counter ships are now in the tool-tip of all ships.

what works for me is a big fleet of like 4-8 capital ships, 30 enforcers, and 40 carriers.

as cap ships i use 2 of each exept for 1 colonizer and one "harrasment" ship.

the cap ships and the enforcers will do their own work but the carriers cant attack so what i do is i keep all my carriers circling the outter edge of the gravity well, this keep em moving and out of range of the enemy(although they can follow offcourse) and pumping bombers and fighters into the fight, also they can quickly jump away when needed.

then i select all cap ships, enforcers, bombers and fighters and sellect the targets to attack shift-attack from the strongest/highest level cap ship and attack one by one working ur way down from the strongest to the weakest.

also the ratio of bombers/fighters i use is usualy like max 6 fighters in the entire fleet and the rest bombers.

however, this works better as advent for they are focust on bombers and stuff than it does for the vasari.

also usualy they try to jump away before their strongest ship dies as its very expensive to replace, especialy at higher levels.

So what is the counter for LMR frigate? I know there is heavy cruiser, but in order to build it you have to build 5 (!!!) military stations and research it, while Vassari can do research of their version of LMR frigate with just one military station!

So, whats the counter?

Fighters, flaks (to a lesser extent).

As Annatar said, fighters shred them. Most mercilessly.
